Has anyone seen Mamma Mia Here We Go Again? My significant other is egging me on to watch it with her. It's a chick flick and not usually my favorite genre. And ABBA music...I can tolerate it, maybe on occasion even induldge in it as a kind of guilty pleasure, but on the whole, it's not my type of music. So as a guy, would I be able to sit through it? My husband hated it, and he liked the first one. It’s s wait until Netflix movie.

I recently had an emotional moment. During the opening sequences of Horizon Zero Dawn, we see Aloy grow from a child to a teenager during a training montage. It was very well done. My eyes kinda watered up.

I really wanted to like Mary Poppins Returns. But it's a mess.
I thought it's biggest problem would be that Emily Blunt is no Julie Andrews, but it turned out she was one of the better parts of the movie. It was too busy. Too much going on. Too focused on the first movie and not to its advantage. The music was OK, but nothing close to the music of the first.
Plus the dinosaurs were disconcerting.

My husband hated it, and he liked the first one. It’s s wait until Netflix movie. Well, I did watched it in the end. Managed to sit through it without getting up to leave halfway through the movie, that surprised me. Not much of a plot I have to say and Meryl Streep was hardly in it. But there was Cher, and that probably allowed me to get through the movie. Whenever she was on screen, the movie suddenly came alive. ABBA music...well that depends entirely on how you accept ABBA songs. If you like it, great, if you don't, then the movie is going to be an endurance test. I'm not exactly an ABBA fan myself. Some of their songs I can tolerate, while others I absolutely cannot. But I will admit, that last song in the movie is sort of alright, maybe I will even like it if I am in the mood. Or if not, use it as a punishment whenever your kid (or husband) misbehaves by forcing them to listen to it, hehehe:

Why even attempt to improve on Julie Andrews (I’m talking to you, Carrie Underwood).

Over the break, I ended up watching both of they (over)hyped Netflix movies with my daughters: Bird Box and Bandersnatch. I didn't think either was particularly good. Bird Box created some suspense, but there were some pretty glaring plot holes. Also, it was pretty quick on the heels of The Quiet Place and was similar enough in some ways that it suffered by comparison to what I thought was a better movie. Bandersnatch was an interesting concept, but I found it kind of tedious. It was really well executed from a technical standpoint in that you made your choices and the movie progressed pretty seamlessly, but the story wasn't particularly good. But my daughters really liked it and have watched it multiple times trying to find new outcomes.

Bandersnatch was an interesting concept Not exactly a novel one, though. When laserdisks first came out, there were several attempts to make interactive movies that would allow you to make choices along the way and change the outcome of the movie. And of course, in book form, the "choose your own adventure" books have been around for a long, long time. Video games, however, are probably the most common format these days for interactive storytelling. One of the choices the author of something like this has to make is whether the participants decisions will influence and change the story in a subtle way or whether they will cause more major changes to the over outcome. The former is more like video games that basically play out the same way every time but have "good/bad" endings (usually seen in cutscenes) versus games where you can wildly change the outcome (4X games and similar strategic games, some RPGs, most "visual novels", etc.). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_movie

All of a sudden I wanted to watch "Taps". Went to the iTunes store and its only for rent and not for sale. Strange. Probably due to licensing. Back when that movie was made, very few people bought home movies. Renting was the normal activity. So there is probably a licensing agreement in place that allows renting, but not one that allows selling copies.

Surfing through YouTube last night using VPN and saw the "Pokemon Detective Pikachu" trailer. Not an animated movie, but a CGI/human mix like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" type. Kind of excited for this movie to be released after watching it...though its curious why they selected Ryan Reynolds for Pikachu's voice.

Just watched a bunch of movies on the flight back:
Halloween....not bad. Its suppose to be the direct sequel to the original 1978 release or the second one, basically wiping away the previous sequels with an alternate timeline. Promoted as the final showdown between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, but I think they left it open at the end where Laurie’s granddaughter Allyson may be putting on the mask should they go with any more releases. Right from the start I got that eerie feeling with the theme song playing and it didn’t disappoint. Two things I realized while watching this movie: How Jamie Lee Curtis is getting old and throughout this movie I kept comparing her now to her dance scene in True Lies. Which would also mean I’m getting old too (sigh). Speaking of getting old, it would explain why I am getting more squeamish in these thrasher films. Before, no problem. Now I have to turn my head whenever something is about to happen.
Death Wish...talk about getting old, Bruce Willis is climbing up there since his first Die Hard movie. What was depressing was seeing Elisabeth Shue as the mother of a 17-18 yr old. Long gone are those Back to the Future and Cocktails days. Death Wish wasn’t bad, kind of a stark contrast to the original where (if I remember correctly) Charles Bronson’s character just went out and sought the assailants. Whereas Willis’ had a conscious spin to it, and how it felt after the first kill. Wasn’t bad film, really.
Equalizer 2...sequel to the first one. Loved the first one, sequel is about the same as the first. Didn’t bring anything new to the sequel and it was quite predictable who the bad guys are.
Venom...good action, funny at times but a symbiot suddenly have a conscience on killing, or was it a result of being with Eddie Brock? Sequel looks promising with Carnage being on the table.
The Predator...disappointing.

Just watched the Chinese sci-fi blockbuster “The Wandering Earth”. It’s a huge success in the box office where its been compared the “The Black Panther” and “The Avengers: Infinity War”.
Premise of the story is that the Sun is about to destroy the Earth and the world government decided to move the Earth to a different location 4.2 light years away by installing over ten thousand thruster engines to move the plant and a few thousands torque engines to stop the Earth from rotating.
As the Earth approaches Jupiter thousands of engines shut down due to the gravitational pull and the cast has 30 hrs to find a way to restart the engines before the Earth plunges into Jupiter.
Interesting concept, and unless my understanding of astrophysics is outdated or outright wrong, movie is terribly inaccurate. I think it raked in a lot of money because it’s the first sci-fi of its kind by China, and was released during Chinese New Year where people can go watch it. I wouldn’t watch it again, that’s for sure.
Funny thing is there was a scene where the crew of the International Space Station was congratulating the main character, a Chinese colonel, and not one wore the American flag. Had the Russians, Brits, French...Americans played a small part in saving the planet.
Did I mention Netflix bought the rights for this film? Wondered if they watched it or was it a knee jerk reaction to ticket sales figures.

The Commuter
I have this Liam Neeson flick on DVD. It received bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but I'm a sucker for Liam Neeson suspense films where he beats up people. I normally don't care for violence in film. I've gotten to the point where he has a "hypothetical" discussion with the mysterious woman on the train. It's intriguing. My question is: should I continue watching this or is this film a dud?
