Fast and Furious 9 trailer is out and it is just as over-the-top as you expect:
There was a time when FF movies were mostly about illegal street racing. Now it's...non-sensical globe-trotting cartoon in live-action. And how do they explain the return of a certain someone here?

Crazy Rich Asians
Saw it. Wondering what the fuss was about. I didn't think it was good at all. I did, however, like all the scenes with Awkwafina. She's a funny actress and they gave her all the best lines. The funniest was when she opened the trunk of her car to reveal various dresses (for different occasions). One was for "Clubbing" and another for "Cocktail party" and a third for "Walk of Shame." Her friend says, "You have a cocktail dress in your car?" and the Awkwafina character responds, "I'm not an animal!"

Waste of time for me. I think the thinking is that this movie sort of "breaks" Asian stereotypes, particularly Chinese, and differentiates among Chinese in Asia vs. Chinese in America, and the fact that the entire cast in this American studio project was all Asian. (Much like the Black Panther film where a studio employed an all-Black crew (I think?) and had one White actor.) Maybe it opened eyes for people who live in Alabama or Louisiana. I don't know. But I (and most of the people I've worked with and befriended over the years) have been surrounded by Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Filipinos, etc.) growing up in Hawaii and then in college and then in my working days. In fact, in almost every place I've been, there have been more Asians than Whites (and Blacks). My college was over 50% Asian, my workplace was about 60% Asian, and of course, growing up in Hawaii, it was 90% Asian. So, this movie doesn't open my eyes to anything new.
But as a movie that shines some light on Asian (Chinese) culture/history, I thought Joy Luck Club was a much better movie. I almost shed a tear during one scene where the mother had to abandon her baby under a tree.
Also, I watch a lot of foreign films from China, Japan, and Korea (as well as European films from Sweden, Germany, France, etc.), so a Western-made film with an all-Asian cast set in an Asian environment showcasing some slice of Asian culture was sure to disappoint. And it did. It kind of sucked.

For me, it was just a fun, reasonably-well-made rom-com with interesting, likable characters.

Ad Astra
Finally finished it. Kind of mediocre. Not terrible. Not bad. Just so-so.

Serenity (2019)
Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Diane Lane, Jason Clarke. A star-studded film. About halfway done. This is either going to be the greatest film or one of the worst. I'm leaning toward the latter. The premise is good. Generally speaking, I think all stories involving one person's plans to murder his/her spouse are pretty interesting -- as a start. I'm anticipating a particular twist based on numerous clues. If so, this is going to be embarrassingly awful.
Update: Well, it was awful. The movie pretty much gave away the "twist" halfway through. It was exactly as it said it was going to be.

Never heard of Serenity, sorry to hear it sucked. Zombie Land 2 was a good one, at least it will put a smile on your face.

IT IT: Chapter 2
Well, I noticed the release of IT: Chapter 2 and didn’t realize there was a new version of IT, the 2017 film. There was a 1990 miniseries but I think we stopped watching after 1-2 episodes.
So, we watched IT today. God, it was awful. Will watch IT: Chapter 2 tonight.
Update: Both movies were terrible. Other than the occasional flashbacks of the adult characters of their childhood days, nothing in these two films is redeemable. Just crap.

...and in both cases, Serenity is the name of a ship — a space ship in the Firefly movie and a fishing boat in the Matthew McConaughey movie.

Watched Once Upon A Time in Hollywood...don’t get it. Is Tarantino trying to entertain us with a possible end in the murder carried out by Manson’s followers if there was the stuntman of an aging Western movie star living next door?
Luce, interesting thriller of students getting back at their teacher.
Another Child - a Korean movie about the daughters trying to end the adulterous affair between their respective father and mother. Kind of a sad flick, humorous at times.

Harmonium (2016) Japanese film. Really good. There are minor twists and plot developments that occur quite naturally. I was riveted to my chair watching this while I was in and out of sleep during IT: Chapter 2, especially during the big battle scenes.
