Local girls aren't going to the "elite" schools. When that starts happening, then the Gophers are in trouble. That's the single most important thing Hebert did here: convinced everyone from Gibbemeyer to Dixon to stay.
There was a time when Shudlick, Rome, Bachmann, etc. went elsewhere.
Minnesota needs to keep their best players AND find the occasional stud from elsewhere. That's the winning formula. Not easy. But it works.

With The title of this thread, "future of Minnesota" - dare I ask, what direction is Minnesota going. Are the Gophers the big league version of Northern Lights? Can Hugh compete in the B1G with what grows within driving distance of the Pav? With the 2017 class, yes, he has the luxury of being completely fine getting all in-staters (although he'll obviously go after other big shots from out of state). For the other recruiting classes, he needs to land more top recruits not from the area in order for the Gophers to stay as competitive as they've been in past years.

The anticipated walk-on, Carly Rasmussen (San Diego), was practicing yesterday, but she isn't on the roster, which is kind of strange. She played some nice right back defense.

Nice to hear that her defense was good. We cannot have enough of that. Hopefully that will really be a strong point for us this fall when the season gets rolling. It does seem strange that she still isn't listed on the roster. If she does stay with the team, I wonder if they would use her in a Jess Menden-type fashion: technically a setter, but more often used as a DS.

OK. I'll try again. Define "elite." Minnesota is an elite program.

Certainly, this has been a top program, but it isn't one of the schools that draws the best players from elsewhere. Its not one of the teams that we know is a big win when they beat one. The floor isn't overflowing with talent scrapping for the few available moments of playing time just to be part of a national title. Titles are still more dreams than reality. I agree with you on a 2A status, but question wether that is any more important than 2B to a young recruit to travel across the country who knows they won't be playing for a Stanford, Texas, Neb, PSU... It's awesome what they have done with local talent; lose that and they will be in trouble.

If Minnesota has indeed offered '17 Sheehan, the Gophers have back-to-back 6-footish outside hitters arriving. If Brie Orr jumps on board, they get even smaller.

volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/54756/minnesota-2014I started a brand new "Minnesota 2014" thread today on here. My intent was to keep the new thread somewhat in line with the other strictly "2014" team threads - Nebraska 2014, Wisconsin 2014, etc. Should be a good place to discuss points from the 2014 season -- particular matches, players, rumors, coaches, etc. It might be a bit slow on the new thread until the upcoming scrimmage and/or first match. I see no reason why this thread cannot continue on, however. There is always plenty of speculation for the Gophers, as we all know!

Hey Ruffda, how many Big Ten championships have the Gophers won? Exactly one. How many National Championships have the Gophers won? None. Since when can you describe a program as "elite' when they have won only one conference title and no national titles in 35 years? I am a Gopher fan, but I also am objective, and while the Gophers have a top 20 to 30 program I don't think you can call it "elite' until they prove it on the floor. A very good program-yes; an elite program-no.Sorry, just my opinion.

Geezieweezie. You guys complain about the complicated answer and then complain about the simple answer.
Seems like he explained himself. Top 5 elite? No. Top 10 elite? Yes. You need to define what you mean by elite. Regardless, to act like Minnesota doesn't have one of the best volleyball programs in America means you haven't been paying attention. We all want more. But that doesn't take away from what they've given us.

Until proven otherwise, I'll be of a mind that Minnesota womens VB is on a rapid rise and will post haste be a perennial major player both in the B1G and nationally as long as Hugh McCutcheon remains the coach.
