Maybe Maglio will enroll in the spring? Does Canada have the same school systems as the U.S.?

I'm wondering what the spring practices will be like. There will only be Vorster in the middle as Adolpho is still in basketball season. There will be only be three defensive specialists/liberos which hasn't happen in a while since at one point Shoji had seven in the fall of recent years. There also will possibly be a few indoor players playing sand (Long/Manu-Olevau/Mendoza/Higgins/Taylor). Speaking of the 2014 team, there can be many different combinations for a starting line-up. I may get some hate for this but I think Manu-Olevau will still be in the mix for a starting spot. There were a few times she showed potential and they could use her at a full time right side player so she wouldn't have to pass. I'm wondering how Passi fits into the mix because haven't seen her play but have heard good things about her. Higgins seems to have the setter position locked up but if Goodman is fully healthy I can see her become a blocking setter like what Minnesota did subbing in Schau/Howard for Palmer when in the front row. Mendoza and Kahakai fighting for the libero spot should be interesting. Whoever doesn't win will get playing time as a serving/defensive specialist. Vorster does well in the beginning and end of the season as she seems to have a slump in midseason so hopefully with more sets she will have the right determination all season. Adolpho had her ups and downs but Shoji predicted when she came that she could be an All-American by the time she leaves so maybe it will happen. Then I'm wondering how Taylor does as an all around outside. I know she played in the back row but that was back right and it is way different from middle back and she will have to pass. The play of the freshman is a bit iffy. Kahakai is the most probable to play. Greeley was ranked high as a high schooler and brings some power but I'm wondering if she can handle playing six rotations unless they do what they did with Taylor only playing front row as a freshman. I'm hoping either Maglio or Huff redshirts to save a year. Whoever doesn't redshirt should get a lot of playing time as a backup so they get the feel of the game. Does anyone know if Guinasso is still going committed to indoors because Cindy says she might not which leaves four back row players. Well, I can only hope Vorster works on her timing and adding variety to her arsenal. And blocking. Basically work on being an actual presence in the middle. Being the only middle in the spring will give her more reps. Olevao will be in the mix due to two things: she improves on all aspects of her game, or because UH has no choice but to put her on the court, like this past season. Higgins should be solid at setter, and I'm hoping Kyra Goodman turns out to be a pleasant surprise. Taylor can work on handling more passing responsibilities and shouldering the bulk of the offense. She has no choice since that is the UH system. The three back row specialists can get some valuable reps. Mendoza will be in the mix for libero in the fall, Kawamura needs to work on her serving AND defense if she wants an expanded role this coming season. Or be a consistent passer if she is to be in the libero mix, especially since she was already the No. 2 libero at the beginning of the 2013 season. Ponce has seen the least time, so the spring season could give her valuable experience. Very interested in what Passi can provide. If she can come up with what Satele did in her two years at UH, she'd have a slot. Ginger Long - I really hope she improves enough to be of some use. I hope the newcomers make a quick transition especially the middles. Yes, both starters return, but with Hartong gone, UH could really use an upgrade at both middle spots. Outside hitter has no depth, with Taylor being the only proven player. Newbies better be ready to contribute, because unless Olevao and Long make gigantic strides, it's going to be a long (short) season. So fall players: 1 Ginger Long, OH/DS, 5-11 5 Kyra Goodman, S, 5-11 7 Tayler Higgins, S, 5-9 8 Nikki Taylor, OH, 6-3 9 Jade Vorster, MB, 6-4 10 Tai Manu-Olevao, OH, 6-0 12 Keani Passi, OPP, 5-9 14 Sarah Mendoza, Lib./DS, 5-5 16 Kayla Kawamura, Lib./DS, 5-4 20 Katiana Ponce, DS, 5-3 If there is going to be a spring match, Vorster will have to play both middle positions if Adolpho is unavailable. Or maybe Goodman will play some middle. Taylor will probably be joined by Long on the left, with Higgins setting and Passi opposite. If Goodman has Thurlby-like attacking skills, she might also play opposite. I see Mendoza and Kawamura taking turns at libero with Ponce as a defensive sub. This will be a weak spring if certain players cant step up. I see a pre season ranking of 15-20 for the bows. The freshman will have to set up come regular season if they want to win. I have a feeling greeley can do it and maglio will be a good sub. Huff is the most raw like others have said, so i see her redshirting. Nikki and tayler will be the leaders this season.

Maybe Maglio will enroll in the spring? Does Canada have the same school systems as the U.S.? If her school isn't semestered, then definitely not. Even if it is, It's likely she wouldn't have enough grade 12 credits to graduate. We'll most likely see her in the fall.

If she's a 6-rotation player now (as a high schooler), she must be at the very least decent. I now the switch to D1 is a whole lot different, but many players came in and are doing fine. Maybe Shoji simply "babies" the players by not having them start right away. If you're big time, you play big time. At the end of the season, I'd rather have a Greeley who's been playing all 6 rotations from the start of the season rather than someone who's been playing for the past month. Let her get her kinks out of the way; let her see what she needs to work on from week 1. Not try and put pressure on her in November and then try to expect her to be awesome in December.

Personally, I would find it more amusing if Hawaii went with the one middle system that Japan used at the Grand Champions Cup. One player is required to block middle in this system, but I would view it as a great opportunity to practice blocking...Manu-Olevao would be my choice for this spot. Not to mention, it mixes things up and gets player comfortable hitting for different spots on the court. I'm wondering what the spring practices will be like. There will only be Vorster in the middle as Adolpho is still in basketball season. So a few changes in the roster since the last post. Jade Vorster has moved on, while Kayla Kawamura and Kyra Goodman have decided not to return. That means Hawaii lost a starting middle who was an all-conference selection at some point in her career, a serving sub who appeared in 19 matches, and a redshirt who was slated to backup this season. Additionally, Katiana Ponce, a defensive specialist who played sparingly last year, may or may not return.
So returnees: 1 Ginger Long OH/DS, 5-11, Jr. 7 Tayler Higgins S, 5-9, So. 8 Nikki Taylor OH/OPP, 6-3, So. 10 Tai Manu-Olevao OH, 6-0, Jr. 12 Keani Passi OPP, 5-10, Jr. 14 Sarah Mendoza L, 5-5, Sr. 18 Kalei Adolpho MB, 6-1, Sr. 20 Katiana Ponce DS, 5-3, So.
Newcomers: Kalei Greeley OH, 6-2, Fr. Emily Maglio MB, 6-2, Fr. Megan Huff MB, 6-2, Fr. Savannah Kahakai DS/L, 5-8, Fr. Olivia Magill MB, 6-2, Jr. Kendra Koelsch S, 6-1, Fr. Clare Anderson DS, 5-5, Fr.
Gina Guinasso, a 5-9 DS/sand player, has also been mentioned.
The UH 2014 recruiting class is ranked 12th in the country.
Taylor and Adolpho will start, with Higgins likely at setter. Mendoza should figure prominently in the lineup. If she is not the libero, she will be the primary DS. Olevao is also a possibility as a starter, but only if the newcomers aren't ready. Passi could figure in on the right.
As for the newcomers, Magill will likely start opposite Adolpho. Kahakai is a possibility at libero or primary DS. The last time Shoji recruited a back row player, she started for the majority of her career. Greeley could see action while Koelsch should be assured of playing time especially after Goodman's departure. One of the recruits could possibly redshirt.

I see Higgins starting at setter, Mendoza at Libero and Tai Manu Olevao at rightside. Of course this is just my opinion. ?

I think it's obvious that Higgins, Taylor, Magill, Adolpho, and Greeley will start. The only spot that's up for grabs is the opposite and libero.

Shoji from past history, is hesitant in starting a freshman right off at left OH. Olevao started as LOH2 nearly all 2013 season and knowing Shoji she'll probably start in that position. If Greeley lives up to all the expectations, Shoji will probably start her on the RS, not having her to bear the pressure of the Shoji dominant LS offensive system. Nikki Taylor was in the same situation, starting all season as a freshman on the RS.
As far as Huff and Maglio, I see only one redshirting. Shoji needs one MB available for backup for Magill and Adolpho.

So, where is Kyra Goodman going? I remember reading somebody posting that Goodman is not necessarily leaving UH, just the team because of injuries.

If Adolpho improves on her speed, Hawaii could have a very nice 1-2 punch in the middle with her and Magill. Magill hit for a decent percentage and had respectable kpg and bpg in the tough Pac-12. Experience seems to be in the middle, therefore, I think next year, we might see more middle attacks. Maybe like in 1998/1999 with Bown/Lima/Roberts

The results of that 2000 season may have had a different outcome if he wasn't hesitant in putting a freshman who clearly was more effective than the incumbent senior. With Kahumoku, Lima and Gustin on the frontline, this was a championship team that never came to be. I'm sure that Shoji has this memory on his forehead, and with the impact that Nikki Taylor has had as a true freshman, hopefully he'll make the right decision of where to place Greeley.
