I have seen Katherine play a number of times...if the Illini excitement is over a player not even mentioned in that competition (Miss Volleyball) I would certainly recommend you temper your excitement until you see how she develops with time. NO comment or Ali being good or bad, just suggesting the Illini staff went WAY out on a limb with this call.

Not sure that the #10 player in the country, an Under Armor and AAU all-American, is that big of a risk. Hambly is quite thrilled to have Bastianelli join the team.

Help me understand how an athlete of said standing wouldn't even be considered in the running for the best vball player in Michigan, which is how a hall of fame coach described "Miss Volleyball."
Is Michigan high school politics out-of-this-world?

Detroit Free Press notes that Michigan Miss Volleyball is selected by the coaches. It also says that her school has nine State championships. Odd that a "top 10 player in America," from a high school rich in a winning tradition, isn't even selected as a candidate for the best player in Michigan.
Something doesn't smell right.....Ali has a spectacular interstate PR presence, or a horrible intrastate PR presence.

There are a number of reasons why a player may be left off a list. I don't put too much stock in these lists. I have seen more than a few players over the years who were named "Miss Volleyball" go on to play at mid-level schools or have mediocre careers at the college level.
Most coaches evaluate players at the club level, where they are competing with other top talent across the country. Ali has demonstrated she can compete at a high level, as evidenced by her accomplishments both in high school and in club volleyball. To say Illinois went out on a limb recruiting her is absurd.

She's better than any middle Illinois has on the roster right now. I'm sure Hambly is very happy to have her.

The following was taken from Phaedrus' VT summary of the Coaches' Super Panel at the AVCA Convention at the Final Four this year. Dr. Mike Hebert was the moderator who asked questions of the panel consisting of Doug Beal, the CEO of USA Volleyball; Salima Davidson the associate head coach at Penn State; Shelton Collier, the head coach at Wingate University; Laurie Corbelli, the head coach at Texas A&M University; and Karch Kiraly, the national team head coach for womens: "Dr. Mike then turns the limelight onto Shelton Collier about his transition from Georgia Tech, a Division 1 volleyball program that he built into a Top 25 powerhouse and then going to Wingate to build the program into a top 25 program as well. he asked Shelton to name two coaches that he views as ideal. He said Anne Kordes for her charisma and Kevin Hambly for his ability to view the big picture. He said that he tries to not waste time in the gym, he doesn't have generic drills whose existence is just to waste time. He emphasizes the need to aim toward winning the next match. He likes to remind his team to let it rip every time they have a choice and to take the same approach every day. He likes treating practices like a rehearsal rather than just a practice, so that the players are more mindful of what they are doing. One main key is for the coach to give the players what they need to play. Finally, he said: Peoplewin championships, not technique, not tactics, but people." Notpriddy...do you equate "seeing the big picture" with delivering hardware?

Well, there was debate in Iowa whether Foecke who plays on the u-21 USA team, has gone to club nationals, led her team to state four times, holds the record for kills at state, state kill efficiency, etc, etc, should be all-state and/or State Player of the Year since she was from a small school and thus 'didn't play quality opponents'. Really. It could also be just as easy as her coach didn't nominate her or her school had had a player win the award recently, so other coaches voted for different athletes--think how many times coaches vote for seniors because they are seniors instead of criteria like 'WHo is better?'

Notpriddy...do you equate "seeing the big picture" with delivering hardware? Zing. Pretty great stuff Paulj. Any chance I can convince you to take all your trenchant passive aggressive shots regarding Illini vball in a single post? Scratch that itch and be done with it. Oh, and notwithstanding paulJ's keen recruiting wisdom, keep taking those risks on consensus top 10 kids, Kevin.

Great team this year, which makes it all the more disappointing that they weren't able to get past Florida in the tournament (truly thought Illinois was the better of the two). I don't think they would have beat Stanford in the next round, but they still should have beat Florida and probably would have put up a better fight.

I am learning the guys on here are super sensitive so I'll try to word it in order not to offend. Next year's team imo will be strong if not stronger then this year's team. It appears from the many games I've watched this season the setter position was their weak point. With the arrival of Jordan Poulter and the incoming OH they should be in good shape. She's in the same playing field as Carlini. That's a all around game changer.
