Long time reader, first time poster..
I have only seen part of 1 match this year, but curious if we are getting the same defensive production this year with Deme/Bates as Deme/Morey last year? Appears Morey fills Hickey's shoes, but not sure Deme fills the void where Morey was or if Bates at L2 offers defense skills of Deme last year?

SPRI setters especially Carlini are going to come in with more and better technical training than frankly any collegiate coach could provide. They can definitely get better, but that improvement comes from improved leadership, understanding of the game at that level, understanding how to attack opponents etc.... Sheff is saying as much. Collegiate coaches have a ton to offer these kids in terms of how to play the game, but in terms of technical training to set the ball more accurately, quicker? They couldn't possibly in four years with training restrictions, give them a tenth of the time, reps to improve in that area, let alone the quality and expertise in the training they received. Oh I get that. I am calling Pelc on his implication that Lauren's technique has changed. Wholeheartedly disagree. Placement, speed, decision-making are all a byproduct of technique and made possible by good technique. Lauren's not made changes to the foundation she's had, at least as far as I can see. I never implied that Carlini's technique changed.

Based on her early numbers, Morey seems to be doing the work of two people....even JWack didn't have 26 digs in a 3 setter (and that's with 30 points per set)!

I think pelc just misunderstood my rather hasty summary of Sheff's comments re Lauren. It's ok.

I think Morey has been spectacular lately. She started a little tentative. There were some balls dropping because she was giving teammates too much space. Haven't seen that in recent matches at all. She reads the situation very well. Some of her digs are pretty spectacular layouts too.
One thing that left an impression though was her reaction to one that she missed at CSU. She had read the hitter perfectly, but the hitter just hammered what I thought was an unstoppable ball at really close range. She virtually exploded in disappointment though, throwing her hands up and screaming, as if she thought she should have had it. That reaction showed to me that 1) despite being apparently mild mannered she really really really hates to get beat, and 2) she really thinks she should be able to get every ball. Her teammates seem to have a huge amount of faith in her.
Other than her I haven't seen any big weaknesses in defence. Maybe the blocking hasn't always been great, though I thought the whole blocking defence system worked pretty well last match.

Maybe the blocking hasn't always been great, though I thought the whole blocking defence system worked pretty well last match. Kelly outright told Morey to be more aggressive after the first match of the first tournament in Minneapolis. Looks like she got the message. One thing you'll notice is that we pass with 3 now, instead of passing with 2 like we did last year. So it's not just the libero + L2 or libero + L1's DS receiving serve, it's libero + L2 + opp - so Morey, Bates & Court - or libero + L1's DS + L2 - so Morey, Bates & Deme. And I might have screwed up the specifics just there, but that's what I remember. Anyway, we've got a whole different scheme on the floor now, so what you're asking isn't really an accurate comparison. I totally agree with badgerbreath about Morey's internal fire. It's definitely there. Sheffield was taking at the season ticket holder meet & greet about how the players need to learn how each one needs to be communicated with. He gave the example scenarios of what you say when you're passing with Morey and Morey gets aced v. passing with Workman and Workman gets aced. To Workman you say something like, "You've got the next one. We've got this." To Morey you say, "You gonna let her do that to you?!?" I will say that I was not impressed with Bates's passing in the open practice or in the first tournament, but she really internalized the lessons of those two weeks and impressed the heck out of me in Colorado. And they were targeting her with serve receive. She's improved a lot over a short amount of time.

The Fan Bus crew sent out another email tonight. Registration is now open for the Iowa trip on 11/15, and spots are still open on the Northwestern (10/1) and Illinois (10/4) trips. We're getting down to the wire, so if you haven't registered yet, you should go sign up now. They're even going to have satellite TV on the bus on the Saturday trips so we can watch the Badger football games. Even if you're not local, you can still help. They're trying to build up their social media presence to get more registrations, and apparently magic things happen when you hit 100 likes or 200 followers or whatever. So like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter. I'm looking at you, badgerbreath and SportyBucky. And even you, @pelcj11.

Way to go, Mariah! I had to laugh at the coach, talking about the rivalry: "It's always a cat fight when we play each other."
