Damn. Just look at the number of one-on-ones and split blocks she is able to get her hitters with those crazy sets. And they don't even have some of my favorite plays in there. There was one at Minnesota, an insanely tight ball that she hauled out of the net on the right side and fed to Court, who tipped it over in the teeny space between the block and the antenna... and it stayed in. The fact that she managed to get such a tight set to her hitter in the perfect position to thread around the block, and without landing herself in the net or in Court's way... just insane. Insane. Also, the running jump-bump set at 1:02? OMG. I know highlight reels are not the best way to judge a player, but this thing is just beautiful. Makes me very sad the season is over.

Funny, even though I was incredibly impressed with all the videos, I continue to notice Lauren's ability to isolate. She's special.

LOL @ "Moving Court from her position at starting setter to basically going out and destroying people at right side."

That interview made me miss these seniors even more. So willing and able to adapt. Speaking of seniors... watching the highlight video of Dom on the same link I provided for Lauren, you really got a sense of how quick she is, and deceiving in her movements too. The way she starts gliding and then explodes to the pin, or cuts inside -- I hope one of the incoming middles can manage that. I'm not sure Haleigh will ever match that.

Quite a few quotable Sheff moments in that interview. My favorite is when the middle school player asked what advice he had for a middle school girl like her and he said, "HGH." HAHAHAHA!

Also gotta love how Sheff, when asked what "On, Wisconsin" means to him first praised the academic strength of the university.
You were saying, Mr. Anderson?

It actually made the hosts a little nervous! Listening to them scramble to deal with it was almost as funny. But his love of Madison and the job he's got is palpable. Must be pretty easy for him to sell the place to recruits. I have a whole coterie of friends from Madison, and our spouses (who were not there) just lose it when everyone starts cooing about "Maaad-ison." It's also clear how much he prizes fundamental passing skills in players. He's a bit of a throwback in that way.

Funny gobuckyspouse is the one that introduced me to Madison about a decade ago. 5 years of cooing about it with me, which followed 7 years of pining about it after graduate school.
My first exposure was coming in from the east, you know Airport, Oscar Mayer, light industry and I was thinking, "and?"
And then I saw the lakes, and campus and bike paths, tree lawns ( there are no tree lawns or bike paths or bike lanes in upstate NY), and the capital and I understood the cooing. Then a few years later we wanted a change from the east coast and here we are, converted to midwesterners. Central time zone is great too.
As a general rule though, I don't take coaches cooing abput their current place too seriously. Happens all the time and they leave anyway. Especially in the revenue sports.

Somehow, I don't think Sheff is going anywhere. He thinks he can build something in Madison. I would've been interesting to hear what he thinks of the state of volleyball in Wisconsin generally, and if he will be doing anything to build that up. That would be thinking long term.
Oh...and Madison is one of those places that is better to live in than to visit. Not really a touristy spot, and doesn't try to be.

Oh...and Madison is one of those places that is better to live in than to visit. Not really a touristy spot, and doesn't try to be. Totally agree. We usually encourage people to come visit in the late summer/early fall, but the sorts of things that we take them to do are things we just do anyway: Farmers Market, an afternoon of Terracing, a walk through the zoo with our friends who have kiddos, watching a football game from Brats or another iconic locale, volleyball game at the Field House, hiking in the Arb or at Devil's Lake (a frequent weekend activity for us). I think Rainbowspouse took some people to House on the Rock one time, but that and heading out to New Glarus for a brewery tour is about as touristy as we go. The best part about Madison is living here.

Got the job and spent five of the best years of my life there. If you like university towns then Madison is awesome. You lucky devils, I mean badgers.

I am worried about what the proliferation of luxury apartment towers is doing to the city, though. We have lost a lot of what made Madison unique, which isn't a good trend. I am torn because I want density and a thriving city, but I don't want to be pushed out, either.
