The 2000-01 teams were, at the core, great defensive teams as well, even though Fitzgerald setting Livingston gave them a truly elite hitting option. I think this team is the best since those at least, although more potent offensively with hitters 3-5.

Hmmm...given my poor memory I generally tend to think the team in front of me is the most special, so I'm not sure my opinion can be trusted. For me it's all about the story the team writes. The story of this team is not finished yet, but there is something about this program rising from the ashes, partly on the wings of Carlini and Sheff, but also from a deep comraderie and commitment among the seniors and the underclassman. Hickey laid the foundation last year when the first thing she told Sheff was that she absolutely had to go to the NCAAs that year. Since then, I don't think I have ever seen a badger team exhibit as much resilience and selflessness - last year Thomas, this year Deme. I would argue that Chapman has been given a mandate to take care of the ball that probably has put her out of contention for personal awards. Even the bench players have seemed totally bought in this year. It's also been interesting seeing how Sheff has managed to construct a working team identity out of the parts given to him, and he has gotten the team to buy in to that identity. If this team is the start of an extended period of success for UW, as Carlini says she intends, it will indeed be a very special group.
I loved the Cook era teams because I was actually there, but Cook always struck me as a bit sour. I really like the Livingston, Fitzgerald, Maastricht, et al era. but I was already mostly away from Madison then, so did not have quite the access that we seem to have today to the team.

It always struck me that on return visits Fitzgerald's era always got the warmest welcome [although this year it was Maria Carlini getting the biggest cheer-should we make her a bronze statue?). I was never quite sure of that being the product of the tail end of a special 4 years or because those players were just extra special for other reasons.

Apparently TC doesn't necessarily know about all the articles on LC that are out there. So, this one's for you, Mr. C! host.madison.com/sports/college/volleyball/badgers-volleyball-determination-drives-lauren-carlini-to-the-top-of/article_74cab0de-37e1-5671-bb68-dd14a312b311.htmlShe started training at the club as a first-grader and continued there through high school, an 11-year process that refined her all-around skills as it became her second home.
“There were days I debated sleeping there. Why go home when I’m going to be back in seven hours? I would not be here today if it wasn’t for them,” Lauren said. “How lucky that I grew up 20 minutes away from the best setting club in the country.”
While Sports Performance — which also produced UW standouts Jackie Simpson, Taylor Reineke and current senior Courtney Thomas — is renowned for its setter development program, Carlini did not focus on that position until her last couple of years.
And for #sheffsayswhat: “If you had a competition (with her) as to who could pull out their teeth the quickest, she’d win that,” UW coach Kelly Sheffield said. “I don’t think it matters, the kid wants to win. It’s at the core of her.”

Tionna looks like she will be a huge pickup. I guess injuries have hindered the other top recruits' seasons a bit.

Me too. Should be even stronger in the backcourt next year than this.

Carlini also said she likes to floor it/race at a green light. Sounds like an Illinois driver....or Long Island?

I finally found a bunch of video of Madison Duello's high school team this season. She's a nice player. Cross between Antonella Del Core and Ashley Wittman.

Nice article on, among other things, the organizers of the fan bus. I was a high five recipient!! It was a great trip, despite the fact I was trying to ignore the fact that the bus could have slid off the road at any time. host.madison.com/ct/news/local/writers/todd-milewski/couple-tries-to-get-more-badgers-volleyball-fans-to-support/article_c8406b38-dbab-5515-92c8-880ff589a70d.htmlThe fan bus took 17 fans to a Wednesday night game at Northwestern and 21 fans to a Saturday night game at Iowa, Andrea Singletary said. The $60 cost paid for the bus and a match ticket. At Iowa on Nov. 15, the group met up with some local Badgers fans and sat behind the team's bench. After the Badgers' victory, Andrea Singletary said team members came into the seats to give high-fives and to thank them for traveling. "That's why we do this," she said.
