Very nice article. Good to see teammates do show admiration for one another at the club level. Thanks for sharing.

I am not sure that Kriskova's heavy bandages were necessarily reflective of a set-back. Perhaps they are being more aggressive in controlling the swelling. Sure would hate for her to sit out the rest of the season, which could lead to a medical redshirt (she only played one point). If she isn't 100%, I don't think we would get any benefit from her playing. Time will tell. It really would be nice to see her on this big road trip. Northwestern could pose a few challenges and Illinois is going to be on top of their game.

So Sheff's presser was pretty predictable. He basically accepted that UW has their butts whupped in virtually every facet of play, team-work and coaching. Beat at their own game. A hard film session this week. Sounds like there were many somber, difficult moments. But he was happy with the response against OSU. He said they made a lot of changes to serve-receive patterns against OSU, and was happy with Workman given how little time they had to practice with the new setup/personnel. He also said that they haven't been getting great production from their outsides because they are mostly being set out of system or in transition, more so than usual, which is making it hard for them to score. www.uwbadgers.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/092914aaa.html

The heavy bandages maybe not, but she was moving s-l-o-w-l-y on Sunday. On Wednesday she warmed up with the team, jogged to/from the locker room, etc. On Sunday she didn't warm up and walked. Slowly.

Ok, I guess we might as well assume Kriskova is done for the season. Even if she weren't, we're sort of at the point of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
As far as Morgan is concerned, well that's why you recruit multiples for the same position and have 12 scholarships. Hopefully she heals up, or maybe she could redshirt.

Things I wish someone would ask Sheffield at the weekly presser (instead of all these lame questions about squishy stuff): With Romana having suffered a setback and still not even warming up with the team, is it worth revisiting a medical hardship for her? We still have an open scholarship for 2016. It would probably benefit the team to continue to have a senior hitter around.

A "boot" could be anything from a ankle strain to a metatarsal break. Hard to say how serious that is.
I don't think a brace is necessarily an indication that Kriskova is any worse than we have seen before. It may just be an attempt to reduce inflammation and speed recovery by increasing lateral stability.
Still, she is unlikely to play in October if they at this rate and you have to wonder if she could play in much of November either. It would then seem crazy to then bring her in at tournament time.
A redshirt seems sensible at this point, but it depends on what Kriskova wants and what Sheff anticipates for that 2016 slot, if anything.

I saw that Carlini is now among the league leaders in digs. For most teams, that could be a good/bad situation, since it would mean you didn't give up points but also didn't get in system swings, but it is another reason why this team works, since the presence of Thomas means they can do more than most teams after those digs. I think Thomas is having a really impressive season, not only with her improved hitting efficiency but also passing pretty well after never having done it (although unlike her initially according to an earlier article, I always thought she could do it well if she got the reps).

Yeah, I really believe that one reason Carlini's addition really boosted this team's performance is the flexibility that Thomas affords her to show her skills across the court. We effectively run a 5.5:1, getting Carlini as many chances to set as possible, but having a good alternative option if she has to dig without loosing any threat on the attack (whether Thomas sets or attacks) or our shape on defense. You can see why Sheff really rides her to be better...she is absolutely critical to the success of this team as constructed, and her improvement (along with Nelson's) is the main reason we are seeing more efficient offense this year.
Thinking of how to replace Thomas may have had some influence on the number of setters he has recruited for the future.

That's an interesting theory. I don't know much about the setters coming in. (In 2015 it's just Juley2 and Carlini, right?) Is she capable of also being a good hitter, so for two years play Thomas's role and then turn into starting setter? Is it also early insurance in the event Carlini is an Olympian?
My biggest fret for next year is backrow defense and who is the libero in waiting.
I'm also waiting for the match when the middles, and Thomas, and Bates, and Chapman are all having a great match. I suppose there are only so many points to go around offensively. We seem to rotate between offensive threats. Obviously, some of that has to do with game strategy and matchups.

It's a lot to ask all of them to have a great match at the same time, though I admit it would be fun to watch! I imagine, given our balance, that teams are forced to try to focus on taking either the left side or the middles away depending on what their own strengths or strategies are. Only PSU really has the option of trying to shut everybody down. Mostly it's been the lefts who've gotten most attention so far as they haven't shown a consistent ability to hit through that. Thomas has been great providing a third option from many places on the court that compensates a bit.
As for setters, Erin is also here for next year, no? So that is three setters. Neither sister has the height that Thomas has, I believe. But there will be more height elsewhere with Blake, Fricano and the freshman. Then again it could be Sheff providing cover for Carlini, or maybe both.
As for liberos, this girl from Georgia seems to be highly rated, so I imagine she's the one on the horizon. She'll have a year with Morey ahead of her.

She is an aggressive focused player. Carlini has no idea how much easier she has it because Thomas is out there with her. She'll find out next year when that piece is gone and I don't see juleys having a huge impact and she is not a hitter at all.

Yes...Court's loss is my biggest worry for next year. Sheff will have to find another way to construct this team if none of the other setters can serve in this role, which seems likely.
