I have been around for a long time, but let's be honest, mostly I make myself look bad. My goal is to someday know 5-10 percent as much as the very many talented coaches out there.

And this is why I have a huge respect for true Wisconsin fans like yourself. You guys are humble and even though you guys are the favorites going into 2014, you still recognize that the b1g is tough.

I don't think Wisconsin is the favorite for 2014, and I honestly don't know how some of you got to that point. Playing well in the tournament does not mean you'll play well in the next conference season. The highest I would put them is second, and even then, I think Nebraska more than likely finishes there behind Penn State. The only team I think that they will jump over next season is Minnesota (and I think they could have tied them last season if not for the losses to Michigan, Illinois, and Purdue - very winnable matches).
Also, I think Michigan State is going to be a monster. In addition to their All-American libero, Moster, they improve their setting with Minarick, strengthen their outside attack with Tolliver, and have a redshirt freshman in the middle who looked really great this spring. I think they're poised for a great finish as well.
1. Penn State 2. Nebraska 3. Wisconsin 4. Michigan State 5. Illinois 6. Minnesota 7. Purdue 8. Michigan 9. Northwestern 10. Ohio State 11. Iowa 12. Indiana 13. Maryland 14. Rutgers

I also think that if Nebraska is going to beat Penn State for a conference title any time soon, this is likely the year it'll happen.

Michigan St. Is going to improve their outside attacking after losing a 3-time AA who gave them 4.5 kps? They lose three of their four best players, not sure how that jumps Purdue or Illinois.

That will take a heroic effort from Kadie, and much improved middle/right setting from Pollmiller.

I think Tolliver and Reinig have the potential to surpass Wicinski's production and efficiency. I think Tompkins is an upgrade over Mathews (not as a blocker just yet, but certainly as an attacker), and Minarick is absolutely an improvement over Kelsay and Petersen. Add in Moster and Galloway to pass the ball, and Fitterer on the right, and you have a very formidable squad IMO.

Mathews was like 2nd or 3rd in the Big Ten in hitting; so you're putting a lot of pressure on someone who's never made it on court before. Also, if you have Tolliver/Reinig/Fitterer on the pins, you can get Galloway passing for 3 rotations, what are you doing for the other 3 (and you've still only got 2 passers at that)? I'm sure they'll be a good team, but there will be a lot of good teams. Purdue and Illinois were already better them last year and don't lose nearly as much (and Purdue gains more).

Mathews was like 2nd or 3rd in the Big Ten in hitting while making actual hand contact maybe 50% of the time. She was efficient because it was weird and she was at 11 feet, not because she was a great attacker. Tolliver can pass the ball. Teams have made it work with two passers before. Besides, Moster gets 85% of the court responsibility, regardless of how many passers you put next to her. Also, I believe Reinig and Fitterer got quite a bit of backrow time this spring. We'll see what that translates into for the fall. I hope it means that they'll at least be able to pass a short ball. And maybe you're right. But, I think Tolliver, a year of training for Reinig, and Minarick will make a big difference for the Spartans.

I think Mathews will be a big loss, but I understand what you say about her hitting. She got a ton of kills from tips and such. I was always surprised to see how efficient she was after watching a match of hers. I think Fitterer will be a beast this season; she kept getting better and better as the season progressed and dominated in the tournament. I think she will be a focal point of the offense. As far as passing, we just got another recruit who originally committed to be libero at Marquette. Maybe Peterson will see some time as DS if she is not setting. Hubbard has also seen a decent amount of court time.

I think MSU's starting lineup will be:
OH-Reinig (possibly with Monson as a DS) OH-Galloway MB-Fitterer MB-Christenson/Tompkins/Garvelink Opp-Tolliver (possibly with Hubbard as a DS) S-Minarick
That M2 position will be up for grabs though

I just hope that they don't run a 6-2.

I bet they at least try Tolliver on the right, as she's a lefty, and Fitterer's natural position is MB.
