robonthemic: Loyola has the No. 1 seed locked-up regardless of what they do the rest of the MIVA Tournament. What that would create though is a very interesting situation in the MPSF because you'd have one less at-large bid. So basically if you are a fan of BYU, Pepperdine, Stanford or UC Santa Barbara you are cheering like no other for Loyola these next few days. The ideal situation for MPSF fans right now is both Loyola and Ball State win the MIVA Tournament semifinals and then Loyola wins the championship. Thanks Vinnie. I knew you'd know! Lewis has 3 solid attackers in Power, Petty and Fitterer and they all seem to be performing at a high clip. That MIVA Championship match is going to come down to defense and blocking IMO. Jaeschke, Caldwell and Smalzer have been extremely consistent all season. The middles' defense and back row defenders are going to be the deciding factor in this match. I think this match is going to come down to serve receive. The last match between the two came down to Loyola staying in system and passing much better than Lewis. If Lewis can handle the Loyola serve then this will be an exciting match. If they can't, the match won't be all that close. I expect Lewis to come out hot in game 1 and then Loyola to roll through the next three to win in 4.

Lewis is experienced and Loyola is not unbeatable. The last month, Loyola has had several slow starts including at home against Lewis. They have recovered in all of them including a comeback from 0-1 against Lewis in a match where Lewis was a couple of points away from going up 2-0. Dan Friend will have his team ready for this match. This will be the 6th meeting in the last two seasons including 2013's MIVA Final.
On a side note, neither the Bulls or Blackhawks are playing Saturday night so I expect a huge crowd as Lewis is just an hour plus away from Loyola.

the best thing the MPSF could do is split into two conferences, Big West (LB, UCI, UCSB, North, Haw + 1 team, UCSD?), and USC, Pepp, UCLA, Stan, BYU, + Cal Bap? in the other. A similar, but more practical solution is to break the MPSF conference into 2 divisions. Then have teams play teams within their division twice, but just once each in other division. This gives the following benefits: 1. A few less conference matches. Which means... 2. Less required conference travel. 3. More chances for OOC matches (or rest) .... 4. Better conferenc RPI and criteria, plus chance to lower other at-large RPI & criteria.

Here's a wild idea. BYU to the MIVA. Anyways, a #2 seems highly unlikely for Penn St., even if one or both BYU and Loyola lose. We'd have to consult Vinnie on this one.

Is Penn State locked into a 2 seed? Penn State is much closer to the #5 seed than #2. Lost to Loyola, UCLA, Hawaii, Long Beach and beat Ohio State Lewis, and , oh, yeah, Northridge. Don't think that even gets them the #3 seed, although we'll see who the candidates are. If Lewis wins, for instance, then Penn State beat them.

No idea what they'll do, but it's clear after tonight's matches what they should do. Assuming Loyola beats Lewis at home Saturday night, the following has been pretty much locked in thanks to BYU sweeping UCSB.
1) Loyola 2) Stanford/BYU winner 3) Stanford/BYU loser 4) Pepperdine 5) PSU (assumning they beat Princeton for the PSUIVA berth) 6) Erskine
Even if PSU and Pepperdine are flipped, they still match up, albeit in different jerseys and time zone.

I've been hoping for something like this for a few years, but would also want to couple that with OSU moving to the PSUIVA to create a rivalry in that conference. I would like to see either Concordia replace BYU or have GCU move to the MPSF and then have the MIVA pick up someone to get back to eight teams after OSU's departure.
