I see that the coaches brought in a ton of foreign players, did they keep any of the other players that the caused the outcry? I cannot tell if the moves worked from the schedule they have played so far, looks like the old team could have done the same so maybe you had an awful 2014 for no reason? And screwed over a bunch of students to boot?

Sorry to resurrect Lazarus again, but thought it might be worth revisiting this coaching/program change at San Jose State 3 years later. To summarize the thread, the new Shephardson wife/husband coaching staff apparently gave a very raw deal to their 2014 players when they cut many of them AFTER playing the beach season in April/May, 2014, in order to bring in their own recruits for that 2014 fall season. It left a lot of players financially strapped to either stay in school there or to find a last minute transfer situation. It sounds like there were no real repercussions for the coaching staff from that move, other than public shaming on VolleyTalk. (Is that a repercussion?) Prior to the coaching change, in 2013, SJSU had an overall record: 8-23 and conference record: 5-15 After the coaching change and last minute release of most existing players, San Jose State went 4-27; 1-17 in conference for 2014. You would think they could have accomplished that much by keeping the girls that were there for one more season, giving them notice they should find a new school, and having a year to recruit their own players. That would have been the ethical move (or telling them to look for a new school months earlier - before they finished their entire beach season for SJSU). However, since that season, things are picking up for the Shepardsons. In 2015, they went 15-18, and 5-13 in conference. In 2016, they were 12-18 and 5-13 in conference. In 2017, they started the season 7-1, and are currently 8-3. Their Pablo ranking of 83 is third place in the Mountain West Conference, behind Colorado State and Boise State. The current indoor roster has 5 Brazilians, 1 Estonian and 7 US players from the West Coast, primarily California. The starting lineup is generally 3 Brazilian hitters, a Brazilian libero, a setter from California, along with another Californian or Estonian hitter and Hawaiian DS. The DS, best MB and setter have all been with the program since that fall 2014 season. In the 2017 beach volleyball season, they went 7-10, beating many of their Bay Area rivals. In 2016, the beach team went 9-11. The beach team is primarily made up of girls from the indoor team, including all of the Brazilian recruits, along with some beach-only players. (Prior to that, in 2015, the beach team went 0-14. In 2014, they were 0-12, not winning a single match in any contest.) I wish that there was a rule that would prevent any new coaching staff from making such late releases of any players in order to form their own team, as it certainly screwed over a lot of girls in this case. (The same goes for late releases of verbal commits, which I have heard of on several occasions happening with a month or less before signing date, and is currently the topic of another thread.) However, from the selfish standpoint of a new coaching staff, the tactic seems to have paid off.

Threads never die here unless they locked........................thanks for the up-date. I notice that best players are not local. I think players in the bay area are wary of these coach's. I would not want people I know playing for them..................they really know how to treat people shabbily and have no problems using and taking advantage of people.

Wow, what a wild and crazy thread. Kind of freaked me out what the Shepardson's did. When I started the thread I actually assumed the OP was mistaken in what was really taking place..haha oh well. I'm sorry their fortunes are turning upwards. Ultimately it doesn't matter to me though. Sometimes wrong is just wrong and what they did when they took over the program is just "wrong". Parents and potential recruits should not take their calls and ignore their entreaties. Let them go to Brazil.
That longintooth character is a piece of work.

However, from the selfish standpoint of a new coaching staff, the tactic seems to have paid off. Might be premature to say this. From the records you posted, they've had a winning record in non-conference play each of the last two years, only to go 5-13 each year in conference and end up with losing records for the season.

The previous coach always looked like he didn't care, but at least he didn't kick his players to the curb.

Possibly, but last season's pre-conference wins were against teams like Louisiana-Monroe, Manhattan, Providence, U Mass Lowell, North Texas... This season, they've beaten teams like Pepperdine, Santa Clara, Howard, Nebraska-Omaha, and took a set off of Kansas. Enough of a better showing to put their Pablo ranking in the 80's, so it seems like they are playing at a higher level than previously. I have no idea how the girls currently playing for these coaches feel about the staff and their teammates. Some of the local girls on the team would not have gotten offers from other schools, and are presumably walk-ons. It's considered a commuter school and a lower cost option for higher ed.

Let's look at your data: In 2013, their conference record 5-15 In 2014, coaches change, their conference record 1-17 In 2015, their conference record 5-13 In 2016, their conference record 5-13 In 2017, they showed their potential and had some nice pre-conference matches. But we will see if they will bring the program to another level. One can never conclude that the previous kids who were "released" will be less productive than the current group.

They are using the same Brazilian pipeline that worked for them at Bakersfield.

Clearly, with that kind of amazing success in just 3 years, they belong in the AAC.
