The new husband/wife coaching team at San Jose State just notified their team tonight that they are not renewing scholarships for the fall season, as the "Want their own team". As a parent, I always understood the year to year renewal was necessary for your scholarship, but typically if you practiced hard, played hard, didn't cause trouble, did well in class, and represented the school well, it was hard to loose a scholarship renewal. My understanding is that all "returning" players are expected to show up to practice tomorrow with their release signed. What suggestions would anyone have for being put in this position of needing to find transfer options this late in the semester, after most schools have closed their Spring signings. I knew something was up when I was present at a recent sand tourney and the head coach left during the SJSU matches to get the team lunch and left the assistant coach with 1 day of experience with the team. Impressive.

Were they inferring (or stating) that they weren't planning to keep any of the current players? Wow.

Is it possible for the players to appeal? If so, is there a deadline?

Were they inferring (or stating) that they weren't planning to keep any of the current players? Wow. SJSU has their 2014 roster posted, and minus the four graduated seniors, all but one of last year's team is returning. The only player not listed from last year appears to be setter Michaela Leonard. Rich Kern shows two incoming freshmen, Summer Avery and Sara Hibbs, but they wouldn't be shown on the roster until they enroll. So at this point, no major (published) changes. I am very curious to see how this plays out.

Should be a huge red flag for any further recruits.

Five of the eight returning players listed on the web site received their release paperwork today and are to bring them signed to "practice" tomorrow night. Two of the players are injured, so I doubt you can be released if you are on a medical injured list. Returning back to my original question, as I let my anger subside....... What do you think is the best plan to find options for a transfer this late in the recruiting period?

This happened to a player we know during her senior year in April (coach said we don't want you any more) and the club coaches were able to use their contacts to find a college for her. Good luck.

What do you think is the best plan to find options for a transfer this late in the recruiting period? Bring it back signed tomorrow or else what? If I was a player, even if I wanted to transfer after these shenanigans, I wouldn't automatically acquiesce to the deadline. The kids and their families deserve time to understand their options.

I know a lot of coaches watch and post on this site, as I've tried to educate myself in the sport by reading your posts, but never thought I would need to address an issue on the forum until now. I'm curious if coaches are really concerned about their reputation in the social world? If a coach does something like this to a player, does the coach really care about any negative impact, do they really care if they get a red flag on the program, do recruits really think if it happend to the current team would it possibly happen to me in the future? Does the athletic department give the coach a lot of freedom to potentially tarish the schools repuation in the recruiting world? Or does a recruit think, Great now there is an opening for me with a scholarship and that will never happen to me. My bet is a leopard doesn't change his/her spots and they will do this again, and again, and again.

vbthat - If you want to talk to other programs, you have to have your release from your former school. Unless you don't want to leave and pay your own way you don't have any options. We had a conversation with the former coach that recruited her when we signed about expectations for future scholarship renewals. I'm sure the school would never honor the word of their former coach, so it is the old adage "@$$%*!* walks" applies.

What I don't get is how this will benefit SJSU volleyball. This program now has to find 12 players before next fall. It just makes no sense.

Yes, I know the release is needed to talk to other schools, but someone asked about an appeal process. In any case, it seems like submitting the signed release Thursday or Friday or Monday won't have a significant effect on finding a place to play. It's probably immature, but I wouldn't sign right away just out of spite. Good luck to the players caught in this unfortunate situation. And a question for the experts - won't this adversely affect the school's APR?
