If the situation is, as you infer,...
"but typically if you practiced hard, played hard, didn't cause trouble, did well in class, and represented the school well, it was hard to loose a scholarship renewal" ...
then IT IS ABSOLUTELY UNCONSCIONABLE for the coach to ask these women to uproot from their college homes, leave behind friends and the security of their entire academic situation, scramble for a transfer, and hope all goes well for the remainder of their collegiate experience.
Did the coach present a list of (reasonable) expectations? Did these players flat out refuse to accept the new coach's training plans? Perhaps there are circumstances that the general public will not be privy to.
But, if these athletes have truly been preforming at the level of the previous coach's expectations... then to toss them off is an unjustified and unconscionable act,
AND THE A.D. SHOULD HEAR ABOUT IT!

If this were my child, first I would be upset, but I'd create a new email account and list their name and that email on here and prepvolleyball.com (after I had a release). That way you can sort through offers without receiving a ton of phone calls and without giving up personal information. As was stated before I'd also contact my club coach for help.

If the situation is, as you infer,... AND THE A.D. SHOULD HEAR ABOUT IT! I disagree just a tad, S-J- SSSSSSSSSSSS - U, State school = loads of regulatory oversight. I wouldn't stop at the AD, I would head straight to President, and if no response, even a "I will look into this matter" standard response in 24 hours, I would next go to the Chancellor of the State System. again...not doubting credibility, but I say this based on what we know so far...

I think Mississippi State, Cincinnati, and possibly VCU will have some scholarships available for 2014 and beyond. And USF has some kid named Brown transferring, so they may have 1 scholarship available as well. At least I think Brown is transferring.

I feel for the athletes in this situation and I can't speak to the Coaches in this instance, but is there part of the story we're missing here? Is this how Coach Shepardson orchestrated a turn around at Bakersfield or however the SID spins it? But I agree, short notice on non renewal of scholarships is a classless move. Even if you are trying to employ a strategy where you release players to keep them from beating you after they leave; you can give them plenty of notice and restrict where they can transfer to. You don't have to be a jerk about it.

But, if these athletes have truly been preforming at the level of the previous coach's expectations... then to toss them off is an unjustified and unconscionable act, The previous coach won 8 matches last year and "retired" at a fairly young age, I think. The new coaches probably want to do quite a bit better and they are entitled to ask for more. What I don't know is if or how that was communicated to the team. Five of the eight returning players listed on the web site received their release paperwork today and are to bring them signed to "practice" tomorrow night. I'm curious, who are they keeping? Played nearly every set last year Jacobsen So O'Reilly Sr (All-Wac in '12) Roy Jr O'Donoghue Jr Played less LaFollette Jr Pieper Sr Powers So Skadeland So With 5 upperclassman I'm curious if they are going to try to salvage the sophomores, because cutting the upperclassman puts those kids in an especially tough spot. A senior almost has to stay to graduate or be in school for too long.

Thanks Mocha for the reference thread. No surprise then.

Unfortunately the ethics of some college coaches leave a LOT to be desired. There's the entire spectrum from coaches who are honest and see their word as their bond, all the way to those who have no problem blatantly lying to 15/16 yr old girls, revoking verbal offers, etc. Sometimes the newer coaches are the worst.
Did your daughter go to college to play volleyball or to get an education? Perhaps just drop the sport and get a job/loan/whatever and finish the education, wiser for the experience.

So they have a history of similar strategy. We should have expected this no matter the quality of the person or player. It also tells me the school probably knew this was part of the plan all along once they hired them, so complaining up the ladder to the AD or President is fruitless since they most likely endorse the strategy. I understand this happens in the sport, but to allow part of the strategy to be to wait as long as we can to notify them is the part I don't understand. Girls were signing (some have signed) leases for summer and fall housing. Mixed message.

There were 8 transfers on the Bakersfield roster this past season and they went 21-12, and beat SJSU 3-0.
Seems late to do that again but we'll see where this goes.

Yikes, if this is really the case and the administration is endorsing it, what a shame! I understand needing and wanting to win right away, but it seems the school should have some moral obligation to the kids already on the team. If I'm a SJSU fan, I'm disappointed in the lack of morality here.

Saw Bakersfield played this season. IIRC, they had a bunch of Brazilians who were pretty good. I'm sure the coaching staff is just pulling on the same foreign pipeline--and I think the foreigners'll be much happier in SJ than Bakersfield.
