Thats what I never got about people saying "Misty is the best sideout player in the world." If she was, then wouldnt they have served the other player? Had the same issue with Phil/Todd at their peal Precisely because she got served most of the time in that partnership and was very steady. Able to put the ball down against players Kerri's size. Main reason people didn't serve Kerri is because of her contact point on the women's net. She can cut the ball around most players when she gets set like she should be. To take her really sharp cross court hit even on the smaller court takes a big jump into the angle and she can still get it around them or just go back down the line. When Kerri and April played the Brazilians in the wind not to ling ago and lost it really stressed their passing. As good as their playing is I want to see them get better at passing lower when the wind is kicking up like crazy.

People served Misty because they knew they had a better chance of scoring against her than against Kerri. Passing is their achilles heel, to the extent they have one, but its a small weakness. How often is heavy wind even a factor on the international tour anyway. It is moreso on the AVP sometimes, but even there its not prohibitive because most of their contested matches will be played on center court

BOOM!

I am not going to get in another argument about who is better Misty or Kerri. As for Kerri and April they are a great team and are doing what they should be. They should be winning and dominating this season. Most of these teams are very young and will need time to grow. Larissa coming back into the mix will make things more interesting for sure.

I think the federation was keeping her out for a while too, or maybe I am misremembering that. I'd always heard it was Larissa's decision - she wanted to take a year off, get married, and heal up nagging injuries. As for why she came back, why wouldn't she? She's only 32 and has at least one more Olympic run in her.

If things don't go well with their partners does anybody see Larissa and Juliana hooking back up next year for a Olympic run?

It wasnt my intention to start one, merely to say that if Kerri/April enjoy a dominating season, then the debate will really cease to be one. As for your point about the other teams on the FIVB being young, is that really true? The Americans are somewhat young (meaning Ross and Carico) but thats it. Even Emily Day is 27 I believe. Of this week's top 10 seeds (and I almost freaked out seeing the German girls now no. 1 until I remembered it was in Berlin): German girls are 29 (all ages are averages of the two players) Lima/Rocha are 30.5 (and both are in their 30s) Germany two are 25.5 Spain is 26.5 Agatha/Barb are 28.5 Dutch girls are 35 Salgados are 28.5 Czechs are 25.5 Kerri and Misty were dominating at 25, as was Jackie Silva, Sandra Pires was dominant a couple years earlier than that, Shelda was around 25, Larissa and Juliana too. Holly is another There are exceptions, like Karolyn Kirby and Ana Paula, but the ages of the current teams are when female players are in their primes. If these teams cant beat Kerri April now, they likely wont do so until Kerri falls off a lot more than she has physically.

Kerri is not going to fall off physically unless she has a freak injury. She just eats too well and works out too hard. I am talking about China and Italy mostly. Seems like they need to grow quite a bit as does SummerDay to become really elite. As for the teams you named why they may be good most are not elite. There is certainly no Silva or Pires in that bunch. It helps having Larissa out of the picture too. Don't get me wrong what Kerri and April doing is great but I consider them both elite. Much like Larissa and Juliana were together. I just am glad to see Larissa back and am hoping that some of these younger teams will become competitive as they grow.

Kerri will be 36 at the end of the year. In the FIVB era, she has already had the best season of a woman her age ever. Everyone, without fail, starts to fall off soon after 35. if they havent before then. Kerri can still win because she is so big and skilled (Denochea won an AVP in her 40s) but Kerri has maybe two more seasons (counting this one) as the best player in the world and I would guess less. Even now she isnt the blocker she once was and teams go at her more than they used to. Freak injuries arent freak injuries anymore when you start getting into mid to late thirties.

Ya your probably right about the injury thing wear and tear after years of playing more likely to be the culprit. One thing about Kerri though she has April for a partner who is in her prime if you ask me.

Teams are only "going after her" because she is playing her off side. For her to switch sides at this point in her career and still dominate is unbelievable....Karch could not have done what she is doing.... best women's player ever and maybe best beach player ever.....

I agree Tinman best player of all time. Look at her winning percentage. Says it all right there.

It really is amazing. Seeing her play against Fopma, who is an excellent player, really demonstrates how unique Kerri is. They are around the same size, but Kerri moves so much better than Jen, or anyone else of her size. If Kerri were 5'10 I think she still could have won a few tournaments given how skilled she is and how well she moves.
