How serious is Okpala's injury? The big irony is that Hampton--now playing for Clemson--is now healthy and Okpala is not. Anyway, if Mackie is playing middle, who will be on the RS tonight? Damn it. I hope she's healthy before the start of conference. I want to see her vs. Magill. That's going to be epic. Two explosive, dynamic, athletic middles going head-to-head. In any case, a speedy recovery to her, but more importantly full-recovery at that.

Beach with a really nice win. 3-1 over SF, 25-13 in the 4th.
Frosh Ashley Murray with 11 kills, 0.450, ELEVEN blocks.
Beach with 21 blocks total to shut down SF's middles.
LMU up next.

Key remaining non-conference games, where the big west needs to get some wins. #1) North. @ Arizona 9/6, @ San Diego 9/16. Will need to prove they can get a quality win without Gedryn. winning one of these two would go a long way #2) Haw. All the remaining matches are at home, and given the youth/injuries, the pre-season is one big experiment - so the more Haw can win, the better for the conference. #3) LB 9/6 San Francisco, 9/11 LMU. Beach desperately needs to dominate at home from here on out #4) UCI. Pepperdine 9/5, @ New Mexico 9/13. If they want to make a statement #5) Cal Poly Santa Clara 9/20. will know how good the recruiting class is at this point #6) Full lost at home to Texas Tech. chances of winning a top 50 game are slim/none #7) SB LMU in Sacrament 9/5, UOP 9/13 @ Cal. got to beat middle pack WCC teams to be a BW contender. basically have to beat some WCC teams for the Big West to be taken seriously #23 Zona over North LB over SF UCI over Pepp LMU over SB Big West goes 2-1 vs WCC, Hawaii goes 2-1 versus a solid slate. 0-3 vs the Pac-12 though. Big West goes 9-2 at home at least.

I understand that Okpala's injury is minor and nagging...Lon Beach State, however, needs a lot more than a healthy Okpala before they are going to really impress anyone!

Big West rankings after week 2. Definite improvement after a disastrous week 1, in part to playing 13 matches at home and going 11-2 in the process - Some nice wins against the WCC (over Pepperdine, USF, with Poly still battling St. Marys - so the Big West will go at least 3-2 vs. the WCC with Davis sweeping Portland. On the negative, still couldn't get a marquee win for Hawaii & Northridge, and Irvine close but no cigar to finish out their tournament undefeated, so the 'favorite' role in the conference is wide open. The lower teams (UCR, Davis) picked up some wins, and Fullerton picks up a couple road wins against eastern teams that is bound to help RPI some. Gonna go groupings this week, with the picture muddled.
#1-#3) North - can't knock them lower for losing to Zona on the road. Schedule is no help as Northridge plays the entire non-conference on the road - yikes!! Northridge has the most experienced terminators in the conference, and gets another shot for a quality win playing @ Oklahoma - which is a winnable game as well. Hawaii 4-2. Have to like the comeback to give Oregon a test, and picking up a solid win over New Mexico. Now Hawaii gets 3 more solid teams - and a chance against UCLA to pick up a possible ranked win - the conference desperately needs to beat a Pac-12 team. of course, always the disclaimer with Hawaii since these are all at home - it balances what Northridge goes thru. Long Beach rebounded nicely with serving and a solid block, dominating a previously undefeated San Fran & adjusting to playing without Okpala. They get a prime-time Thursday test against a surprisingly high quality (and very possibly to be ranked) Loyola Marymount team that has steamrolled thru the start (beating UCLA and pounding UCSB) of the season. Newcomers Murray and Bukovec made big strides.
#4) UCI - was one point away from weekend perfection, but still 3-1 and splitting Pepp/Utah State probably looked pretty good 3 weeks ago.
#5-#7) Full. Two neutral wins and competing well vs. Northwestern and SDSU a positive sign. Next step is to win against a higher rated team. Cal Poly. A road win to start the season. Since then it's a struggle, likely to take a while for such a young team to figure it out. Battling St. Marys as we speak. SB. at least they finally get in the win column - still this is the biggest disappointment so far. LMU steam-rolled them at the beginning of all three sets, and they never were in the match. Of course last year, they didn't turn it on until the 2nd week of conference - so they have history on their side (for now).
#8 1/2) Davis & Riverside this spot is up for grabs until proven otherwise. Davis holds home serve and beating Portland a boost for the conference so considered moving Davis up a notch but won't since it was at home, plus Riverside got a couple road wins, so a positive development all around.

Titans Outlast Alumni FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball welcomed their veteran counterparts to Titan Gym and scored a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-23) victory in the program's annual alumni match on Saturday afternoon. The match served as a final tune-up before the Titans start their season on Friday when they host the Titan Classic at Titan Gym, opening up the tournament with a match against Bucknell. Tickets for the Titan Classic and the rest of the 2014 Titans home schedule are available by clicking here or calling the Cal State Fullerton Athletic Ticket Office at (657) 278-CSUF. The alumni squad held a late lead in the first as well as some large leads in the other two sets but the Titans were able to capitalize on mistakes to comeback and secure the sweep. Freshmen Niki Withers and Steph Buss looked impressive in their debut with Fullerton, with the latter notching the match-winning kill in the third set. Others making their debut included Rachel Brown, Megan Kurz, Mackenzie Olsen, Katelyn Nielsen and Katie Roux while returners Holland Crenshaw, Paige Reed, McKenna Painton and Devin Ulmer also logged playing time on Saturday afternoon. The Fullerton volleyball alumni squad featured 2008 Big West Player of the Year Brittany Moore (2005-08), 2010 Big West Player of the Year Erin Saddler (2007-10), Titans all-time digs leader Cami Croteau (2007-10), Julie Geissert (2004-07), Genie Francisco (2007-10), Leah Best (2011-13), Cari Bailey (2006-07), Amanda Pfielschiefter (2005-06), Danika Miller (2010-12), Bre Moreland (2010-13) and Jennifer Edmond (2008-11). Former Titan Jamie Ivers (1999-2000) also made an appearance, serving as coach for the alumni. Wow, can't wait to see them in action!

The alumni had not practiced or barely played since the 2013 alumni game. Their coach played everyone which sat half their starters on the bench the entire time, some players were playing positions they had never played before. If they would have played the legit lineup the outcome would have been different, they had a great time but this was just for fun on their side of the court.

I think Kalei should have gotten the Freshman of the week as well... I agree. In the two weekends, Whiters has hit .177 pct and wins the two FOY awards? Kalei Greeley is lacking only the kills per set to Whiters, 4.0 to 2.4 but has better stats in digs, aces, blocks and hitting pct .268 to .177.

these weekly awards are a little subjective - unless someone just jumps off the page - plus they now have three so more to spread the publicity - especially since Hartong won't have a monopoly and get it every week this year as to last week, LB's frosh MB Ashley Murray hit 0.580 with 1.73 blocks/set for the week - and had the 5th best hitting night in LB history also included hitting 0.450 with 11 blocks against previously undefeated USF pretty gaudy stats/stuff - and she didn't get the nod so congrats and a nice press clip to those that get selected

Yes, Niki Withers can improve on her hitting percent. But in her defense, Fullerton lost two freshman starters Saturday morning. So on some of the rotations Niki was the main option and the opponents keyed on her.
Everyone has injuries, but Fullerton is not a deep team like Hawaii or Long Beach and it is harder for Fullerton to instantly overcome the injuries. The injured girls, Katie R. and Katelyn N. might be ready to play at College of Charleston this weekend.
