Davis is playing very well at this point in the season. Tomorrow's contest at Long Beach State will be good one. Look for the Beach to elevate its game and to win in 4 tomorrow night. I would wager that Davis will give the Beach more of a battle then you expect. They are elevated this year - new coach, new attitude. Nice win for Davis. Are they this year's UCSB?

Davis doesn't have a chance to get an at-large with their RPI at 165.
Davis only has a slim chance of winning the Big West but they would need help from other teams upsetting LBS & Hawaii.
UCSB won the Big West and went to the NCAA tournament.
Davis is probably doing neither so NO they are not last year's UCSB!

Got talent? Davis does! New Coaches. New Direction. Great Recruits from last year. Outstanding returning players (evidenced by BW players of the week sweep and conference standings). If Davis does not make the NCAA playoffs this season, watch out for next season!

Great win by Davis, lets not forget this team narrowly escaped Cal State Fullerton last week and got swept by UC Irvine. Davis still has to play Long Beach twice and Hawaii once more.

Yup, Davis surprised me. I can't figure them out: they've played some very good ball this season, but also been beaten by some of the mid-conference teams. Davis gets everybody except Hawaii and Riverside at home the second time through, so it could be a strong second half of conference play for them.
We've definitely got a free for all in the Big West this season. Apart from Long Beach, everything is up for grabs. And, who knows, Long Beach could still stumble.
We've also got one straggler non-conference match this weekend: UCI travels to SDSU for a Monday game.

Next Friday on Halloween, Hawaii visits Irvine. The Anteaters have been playing well of late and should give Hawaii some real competition. This could be another conference-rearranging match.
There are also two other very interesting weekend matchups: Santa Barbara will play Davis at Davis and Long Beach will be at Northridge. The match between the Gauchos and Aggies should help clear the logjam in the middle of the Big West conference. And Northridge's home court match against the Beach may be their last chance to remain relevant. A victory over Long Beach would be a quality win and perhaps put them back into the picture after a couple of very tough weeks.

CSUN's loss to Davis still hasn't been recorded on the Massey Ratings or Unofficial RPI. Let's see if the loss slips by the official RPI? If CSUN gets an at-large because of this mistake, after they lose in the NCAA Tournament I'm sure the matadors will inform the NCAA of the error.

Big West rankings. another week, another upset of Northridge, and with their setter still injured, puts a lot of uncertainty in the Valley as they enter the LB/Hawaii gauntlet on their schedule. Davis has now become the at-large hopeful's worst nightmare - a good and getting better team with a lousy RPI with nothing to lose. Thanks a lot!!
#1: LB - A nice win over Davis, needing a mid-game serving adjustment to serve Davis short . LB gutted out a 3rd set after Davis wouldn't go away. Okpala making her own case as a top conference 'go-to' player. Miley returned, if only for a point, and can get reps in an exhibition against the Chinese team this week. Hopefully Zhejiang gives LB a RPI boost. LB still needs to take no chances and win the Big West, they don't have as much of a RPI favorable schedule that Haw or NOrthridge have.
#2 Haw - home sweet home, and Taylor finally untracked versus SB, and just in time. Next four matches key with Irvine, LB, & North to deal with, they can afford one more loss and one more than that and things could get a little dicey. Irvine would be a much needed road win.
#3) North - probably below #3 for the moment, but will give them credit while they wait for Miller to return, which can't be soon enough as they could use her for LB & Haw given their current mini-slump - North had a fair amount of RPI wiggle room, but the SB/LB losses ate into their comfort zone.
#4) Davis - backed up the SB road win with a Northridge triumph throwing a monkey wrench into the Big West race, and probably not done with a favorable home schedule the 2nd half.
#5) Irvine - SB/Davis/Irvine all neck and neck, Irvine's home wins haven't come against the top teams, one more chance with Hawaii at home, win that and the rest of the schedule won't seem so daunting. #6) Santa Barbara - probably too harsh to drop them for losing to Hawaii, but since they have been so up and down, it's their week to knock them down a notch.
#7: Poly - still searching for a season signature win.
#8: Fullerton - ditto
#9: Riverside - got a set against Northridge! hope springs eternal

I think at this point Okpala is the favorite to win POY with other teams having so-so conference year, unless Hawaii can run the table and the likes of Magill or Taylor can turn in a stellar second half, Okpala should get it, which I think it'll be the first time a Hawaii player has not been named POY or Co-POY in conference since 1994?

Right now I feel Mackie will win it over Okpala but both are deserving.

think it's kinda early for POY
lot's of good candidates, no clear stand-out like last year. Hinger is certainly at the top of the list. Pickrell, Magill, LB trio of Mackie/Okpala/Hudson all could be considered.

Looking at what she has done in the setting department has been amazing for LBSU. Being healthy (well, better than years past) is one of the reason's LBSU has been successful this year, but I think the setting of Hudson is what has propelled them to a 8-0 conference start.
