Big West rankings. another week, another upset of Northridge, and with their setter still injured, puts a lot of uncertainty in the Valley as they enter the LB/Hawaii gauntlet on their schedule. Davis has now become the at-large hopeful's worst nightmare - a good and getting better team with a lousy RPI with nothing to lose. Thanks a lot!! #1: LB - A nice win over Davis, needing a mid-game serving adjustment to serve Davis short . LB gutted out a 3rd set after Davis wouldn't go away. Okpala making her own case as a top conference 'go-to' player. Miley returned, if only for a point, and can get reps in an exhibition against the Chinese team this week. Hopefully Zhejiang gives LB a RPI boost. LB still needs to take no chances and win the Big West, they don't have as much of a RPI favorable schedule that Haw or NOrthridge have. #2 Haw - home sweet home, and Taylor finally untracked versus SB, and just in time. Next four matches key with Irvine, LB, & North to deal with, they can afford one more loss and one more than that and things could get a little dicey. Irvine would be a much needed road win. #3) North - probably below #3 for the moment, but will give them credit while they wait for Miller to return, which can't be soon enough as they could use her for LB & Haw given their current mini-slump - North had a fair amount of RPI wiggle room, but the SB/LB losses ate into their comfort zone. #4) Davis - backed up the SB road win with a Northridge triumph throwing a monkey wrench into the Big West race, and probably not done with a favorable home schedule the 2nd half. #5) Irvine - SB/Davis/Irvine all neck and neck, Irvine's home wins haven't come against the top teams, one more chance with Hawaii at home, win that and the rest of the schedule won't seem so daunting. #6) Santa Barbara - probably too harsh to drop them for losing to Hawaii, but since they have been so up and down, it's their week to knock them down a notch. #7: Poly - still searching for a season signature win. #8: Fullerton - ditto #9: Riverside - got a set against Northridge! hope springs eternal UCI SWEPT UC DAVIS... yep, it was at home, and probably UCI's best win. UCI had six games at home the first half of conf - Davis had only 2 games at home the first half of conference and beat SB & Northridge on the road.

Looking forward to the rematch between the Beach. If we pass well, we should take the match in 3 or 4.

and if LB passes well, ......... then we take the match in 5 + I'm not gonna make any predictions, the best team will win. it's good to see that Magill is back healthy. Both teams will be on a mission.

However, the pressure will definitely be on Hawaii. Lose, and Beach in all likelihood is Big West Champs. A loss and then the pressure is on The Beach to win out. Right now, I'm giving the edge to Long Beach. They just took care of CSUN at the Matadome, where Hawaii got embarrassed. Also, Hawaii is still in dire need of some sort of consistency from ALL THREE outside hitters. The middles are taking care of business, offensively and defensively, but the pins are hot or cold. Taylor goes for 22 kills last weekend, barely double digits this weekend (to lazy to check stats)...Olevau goes from 21 kills last night to 8 or 9 tonight....Greeley starts off very, very slow, then somehow gets it going after 2 sets. Maybe the best move Shoji has done is putting Kahakai at Libero. If I'm not mistaken, she got 17 digs tonight in the 3-0 over Fullerton.

Big West rankings. lots of key matches - LB cements it foot-hold on 1st, and puts the first proverbial nail in the coffin. Hawaii does a Houdini to keep on the side of the win ledger it needed, while Davis doesn't skip a beat and moves into 3rd in the standings. 3 teams still in consideration for an at-large, but with SB & Irvine out of RPI top 100 (when they are in top 100 Massey) means the Big West top 3 are not getting credit for FOUR top 100 matches (and potential top 100 wins). and that could be the difference in getting selected down the road.
#1: LB - LB seems to win ugly, and in this case it involved basically waiting out for Northridge service errors and a whole lot of North net touches, despite Northridge having almost 30 more attacks and North hitting 0.270, LB prevailed - good defense and don't beat yourselves prevailed. and LB has currently 5 top 100 wins (SB, Idaho, St. Mary's, USF, UCI) it wouldn't get credit for in RPI - so they still can't afford to slip to end conference.
#2 Haw - down 0-2 and trailing 3rd set, Hawaii might have begun to see their season flash before their eyes - but they didn't blink - now comes the match of the Big West season in front of the full house on the islands & some powerful MBs going at it - what's not to like.
#3) North - barely hanging on to 3rd but we'll still credit them for pre-conf, even worse they are now barely hanging on to an at-large - good news is UNLV (who North beat twice on the road) beat top 10 CSU, North can probably get by with one more loss, but they are now hanging on by a limb. A win over Hawaii would fix a lot of ills - they haven't been the same since beating Haw @ North.
#4) Davis - practically tied for North for 3rd at the moment - continue to play like a top 100 team. Connors will get serious COY consideration for surging play in conference, whatever he whispered into Squires ear at the beginning of conference did the trick.
#5) Irvine - this year's shoulda, woulda, coulda team. Match points against Utah State, Northridge, and a match in hand against Hawaii - switch those 3 matches & they are a top 50 team. Wait till next year continues to be Irvine's mantra.
#6) Santa Barbara - beat Riverside, but this team needed a good road win.
#7: Poly - barely escaped Riverside, and we are not talking about the team bus ignition not working.
#8: Fullerton - Withers continues to get lots of reps, at this rate her arm is going fall off by her junior year.
#9: Riverside - up 2-0 against Poly, you had to be rooting for them to pull thru.

Davis finished 5th last year. If they get 3rd or 4th thats hardly COY material. Brian is COY

Kathy Gregory made the comment that Conners was COY in the Hawaii-Irvine broadcast, but she doesn't care much for Gimmillaro.

I think Gimmillaro is also the front runner. His Long Beach team went from 4th to first (pending any meltdowns), but more importantly from staying home in December to playing in December (pending any explosions).
