Final Big West Standings. and meeting expectations.
LB 16-0 duh, better than expected, exorcised some demons, after more early season injury and disappointing losses
Haw 13-3 worse than expected, only Hawaii could get in the tournament and feel like such a failure! still they have a formidable block and capable of a win (or two?) in the NCAAs
North 10-6 slighty worse than expected, played themselves out of a bid very possibly, not the ending Hinger deserved & envisioned
Davis 10-6 better than expected, ended on a little bit of a down note, but new coach & solid wins in conference is exactly how to start a new regime
Irvine 9-7 this is tough one - probably about as good as expected. so close though to wins over Utah State & Northridge make it a downer, but finally won a close match against a solid team to end the season (and likely cost the Big West a probable bid - thanks Irvine!!!)
SB 8-8 worse than expected, but maybe should have seen that coming - now that expectations were raised last year, will be interesting to see how much improvement with this core in a year
Cal Poly 4-12 slightly worse than expected. 3rd year for Crosson, had a heralded incoming class that showed some talent, but to not get any wins against the teams above them and only beat Full & Riverside - program needs more athleticsm - next year is critical for Crosson to show progress
Full 2-14 slightly worse than expected, similar to Poly but without as strong a class, seems like eons since Full won the title in 2010 and had a stand-out player (Saddler)
Riverside 0-16 slightly worse than expected. this is tough, going oh-fers in conference was no surprise, but the teams they are losing to in non-conference makes one shudder. when the highlight of the season is taking a set from Hawaii - obviously a structural problem to correct that needs as much an AD/Pres solution as much as coaching (assuming a solution to WVB is even desired)
POY: this is gonna be extremely tough. a lot of players earned it - gonna come from the quartet from LB (Hudson, Okpala, Mackie, Jackson) & Hinger - all are deserving. I'd love to see a libero named the POY. LB got well once Okpala got well & Okpala led the conference in hitting %. I'd give co-MVPs to Okpala & Hinger if I had to decide. sad to see Hinger end the season the way it did

I hope CSUN squeezes in. Three teams, instead of only two, representing the Big West is good for recruiting as well as for the future of the conference.

CSUN gets jumped over by Seton Hall and Michigan State, teams that were behind them in the unofficial RPIs.

www.bigwest.org//story.asp?story_id=18122I know this is on other threads, but since this is the Official Big West Thread for 2014. POY - Hudson (Long Beach), FOY - Murrey (Long Beach) COY - Gimmalero (Long Beach) All three, well deserved!

Kind of an interesting first team. 17 first team members and only 6 are seniors (with half of them coming from Long Beach). I think the awards really show how young the conference was this year and shows some great potential for 2015.
