Buckeyes hit an Ohio State record .595 against the Penguins
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 25th-ranked Ohio State women's volleyball team improved its record to 7-0 with a 3-0 (30-11, 30-25, 30-20) victory over Youngstown State (4-4) in St. John Arena Tuesday night. The Buckeyes hit .595 in the match to establish an Ohio State team record. The previous Buckeye record was .531 against Northern Illinois in 1994. Ohio State was on fire in game one, hitting .909, with 20 kills in 22 attempts with no errors. OSU's Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario), named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week on Monday, scored a match-high 14.5 points with 13 kills, an ace serve and an assist block. Gordon hit a career-high .857 in the match recording 13 kills in 14 attempts with one error. She had five kills in five attempts in game one, did not play in game two, and was 12 kills for 12 attempts before recording an attack error. Also with double-figure points for the Buckeyes were Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) with 12.5 points (9 kills, 1 ace, 1 solo block, 3 assist blocks) and Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) with 10.5 points (9 kills, 3 assist blocks). Youngstown State's Jessica Fraley scored a team-high seven points with five kills, an ace and two assist blocks.
Ohio State broke a two-all tie with a five-point run to open a 7-2 lead. The Buckeyes built on that lead to win the game, 30-11.
Youngstown State took an early 5-2 lead and enjoyed a seven point lead at 17-10. The Buckeyes cut the lead to two at 17-15. At 18-15, two kills from Amanda Miller (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) and one from Mapp tied the game at 18. Tied at 19, a Meyer kill put OSU ahead at 20-19. The Buckeyes held the lead and with a 28-25 lead, used a Penguin error and a Meyer kill to win the game, 30-25.
Tied at two in game three, two Youngstown State errors and an ace serve by Meyer put OSU ahead, 5-2. At 9-5, two Gordon kills and one from Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) opened a seven-point lead for OSU at 12-5. The Buckeyes continued to expand the lead and with a Mapp kill ended the game at 30-20.
For the match, Ohio State hit .595 to .128 for Youngstown State. The Buckeyes had a 59-26 margin in kills and collected six aces to three for the Penguins. OSU did give up 14 service errors to seven for Youngstown State. Defensively, Ohio State had a 30-13 advantage in digs with Buckeye Stevens recording a match-high eight. At the net, OSU had a 7-2 margin in team blocks. OSU's Meyer had a match-high four blocks with one solo and three assists. Buckeye setter Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) had 44 assists in the match, adding seven digs, five kills and two assist blocks.
Ohio State opens play in the Buckeye Classic Friday at 10 a.m., hosting Florida International. The Buckeyes then play at 7 p.m. against Northeastern. Both matches are in St. John Arena. Saturday's match against Montana State will be played at Centerburg High School in Centerburg, Ohio at 7 p.m.
