Funny, recruits didn't seem to take notice when the program was going to final fours.
Hopefully, those within the program are creating a positive environment and the recruits see this as simply a down cycle vs. a poor program.

..... and he also strikes out with many of our state's big 2017 recruits . . . . This seems likely

For those who are interested, a link to main thread discussing Hugh being hired as Minnesota coach: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/44603/pfui-on-hughyAlong with the usual VT tribble, it does seem that the essential issues were identified: Can Hugh's style, training and coaching techniques translate to younger athletes, can he recruit, and will he he go the international route.

Also, for those of you interested, volleyguy has some sort of grudge he's holding against USAV and anyone involved with it.
The question is, what did they do to the guy?

I have no idea if it's time to fire Hugh. I think it's too soon. This "fire him/her" reaction is what every fan of every team of every sport says when things go downhill. Is MN far enough down the hill to justify a firing? Good programs hit rough patches, and that's only magnified when you're in the B1G and there's little room to hide.
That said, the idea that he could be a great international coach but a not-so-great, even average, college coach is very interesting. This happens too. For example, college football coaches who don't fit well in the NFL and vice versa.
So, again, I don't know. MN VB fans are passionate and want the best for their program. Do you have enough info at this point to know if Hugh is best for the program?

Inspired by the #freeAbercrombie hashtag on USC-related threads, let's get this going for Minnesota: #freeGoehner
With seemingly nothing left to lose this season, let her play all the way around. The growing pains will pay dividends next season and beyond.

I don't think we have a coaching problem. We have a recruiting problem.

And in all honesty, I support USAV in many ways. There are some truly corrupt Federations out there, including behind Japan's veneer of politeness and efficiency. We've generally been viewed as the least corrupt among them, but I see cronyism as a major danger sign of the health and direction of an organization.

We need Wilhite to improve, too. But, your point is valid, see if Goehner can play all around.

I don't think we have a coaching problem. We have a recruiting problem. Very true. The recruiting in the past few years has been less than stellar. Maybe some valid reasons for it but they need a strong recruiter. Who is the chief recruiter now, anyway?

There's a reason they offered AG back-row only in the first place--did that change because she improved or because of what else happened with the roster? Long-term I'd think you'd be better served training one of the Tapps to play outside? The blond one is already looking darn good taking traditional approaches on the right, and they seem more likely to become the type of terminator you need.

Paige played on the right side a bit last year. Nora looks better in the middle than she does on the right, IMO. The three kills she had from the middle against Indiana are collectively better than any other three hits she's taken from the pin this season. I wouldn't hestitate to switch them now, and let Paige play through the back row. I mean, what have they got to lose? Paige is scoring mostly on the slide right now. I think it's likely she will be RS next year anyhow with Lohman and Hannah in the middle. Paige's back row play, from the little we've seen, has actually looked decent, for either an MB or an RS in today's world.

Paige's back row play, from the little we've seen, has actually looked decent, for either an MB or an RS in today's world. In your scenario, I would rather see Lohman move to the middle for the rest of the year than Nora. Let her get the experience. They tried Paige on the right side early this year - one match really good, the second one not as good. I agree about her back row play, it is pretty solid. It would also free up Goehner to play back row for Wilhite, or play front row if things are going poorly. I liked in the Iowa match when they brought Nora down the middle. She had some wide open swings there. I have been a severe cynic the last week or so but that is my emotions getting the best of me. However, I do feel there are some parts in place. Can those players improve and become better? Or, have they plateaued? I don't know. But, I think they can. And, will.

When the announcement was first made about Hugh coaching at Minnesota some VTers posted Hugh would have an unfair advantage with recruits in the USAV pipeline and recruits in general. At the time I thought if there is any advantage it would be very short-lived. Most 15 year old kids know nothing about volleyball history or former Olympic teams. To them, Hugh is just another middle-aged guy coaching a college team. His former credentials are lost on young kids.
