So what is Wisconsin doing that Minnesota didn't? How did ND take Minny to extra points last night and Wisco seems to be handling them easily? Based on the stats, one biggie is blocking. I'm forgetting the numbers but Notre Dame was outblocking the Gophers by quite a bit at the break. Then, the Gopher block started kicking in, with half of their 13.5 blocks (vs. a final of 11.5 for ND) in that last set.

There it is. Net tape ace for ND. No missed pass, just a lucky bounce. First ace of the year against UW.

I don't remember Nelson doing slide attacks last year. She's done a few these two matches.

Wisconsin also has Carlini, Minnesota doesn't. If Carlini was setting Minnesota last night, the scores would have been just as lopsided.

Tori gets a kill. Quick from the center. Kvas serves for Court. Houser stumbles, falls, Wisconsin point. WI up 21-13. TO ND.
ND Libero Johnson is something else.
Frick in at L2. Then out one point later. Bates back in to serve.
Blake kill on the slide.

ND setter, second in kills isn't good.

ND's service game has been terrible. probably 10 errors. That is probably playing a role.

I think this match shows a pretty good gap right now between UW and Minnesota. It is early however.

A little sloppy with all the new faces at the end of that set, but still pretty impressive. Hitting .370 compared to .129.
Big difference from yesterday is defense. Morey had some amazing ups, block was much better, the whole team stepped up. That probably explains the difference from Minnie's experience.

So Ellen and Sheffield with some interesting comments. Ellen thinks they need to work harder on covering the hitters, so they have more confidence they are covered when they block, and that their success so far is due to increased speed in the attack game which they have been working on. She got a lot of kills because of the blocking schemes ND was using, that left her one on one alot.
At first blush, Sheff was concerned with how they handled the new flexibility they have in the service game --more options, more weapons, but more formations and opportunity to screw up positioning, roles, etc. They haven't quite worked that out completely yet. Overall he was pretty happy though. ND does a lot of scheme blocking and he felt Lauren read those schemes well and exploited it, for the most part.
Today the team seemed like last year's scrappy defensive badgers with a new more powerful offense grafted on. They seem to have built on last year's run by improving the serving side of the game still further, which should improve defense and offense overall. And it sounds like they have added a bit to the offensive schemes and could improve quite a lot over the year while they get comfortable with it all. And there is depth this year as well.
We'll see, if this holds up, but it's pretty exciting. I'd love to see these kids get a championship this year.
