Bugg liked Kehoe a lot right? Interesting point to bring up ay, might merit it's own thread.
I did see that video where Washington asked her Dad what school was good at Vball and he said Penn State and that was basically it. Ugh... couldn't have said Stanford eh?

Anyway.....one thing the blabber mouths said that caught my interest was that apparently Ali Frantti wrote a letter to Rose saying that she wanted to be a PSU lion....she was in the 7th grade. Obviously at that time PSU was a premier program, but it certainly wasn't the dominating program it is today. Frantti wrote that letter in 2008. I'd say Penn State was pretty dominating in 2008. As a team? Sure.... As a program? They had yet to cement the PSU dynasty, that came two years later after the hodge class left when the program (not the team) asserted itself at the highest level across classes.

Do 7th graders make that distinction? It is telling that by the time Washington and Frantti were growing up with VB, Penn St. had replaced Stanford as "the" destination VB program.

Does it really matter? PSU seems to be playing at the most consistent level even with all the turnover.

Does it really matter? PSU seems to be playing at the most consistent level even with all the turnover. Does it matter? it depends on the arguments being made. All I was suggesting is that when Frantti sent this letter, PSU was riding the culmination of recruiting, not winning on turnover. At that time the program had yet to establish itself as the gold standard of volleyball. Just two years prior, the program had failed to reach the final four for, what was it, the 6th or 7th consecutive season? The turnover didn't start until after the 2008 season. I do know that recent championship squads can't help in recruiting, but 6 years out? that seems long. I'm sure it helped that PSU sustained its success since 2008, which didn't allow Frantti to be swayed, but the initial goal of wanting to go to the program is what is of interest. What chance did any other school have to get Frantti during reasonable recruiting windows (i.e., not 7th graders)? And how many other elite athletes are in this same boat. I'm not saying it's wrong, or trying to pick on Frantti or PSU...it just came up in the commentary and it got me thinking about recruiting in general.

I wonder how many OH's were ranked higher than Frantti by various big time schools when she was a 9th,10th,11th, or even 12th grader?
I would venture more than people would like to admit. How far up the USA Pipeline was Ali for example?
So maybe some just missed the boat.

Any coach worth their weight in salt knows that the USA pipeline, for the most part, is a load of crap and not necessarily indicative of a players ability.. And Frantti was very high on A LOT of lists. But she had a narrow focus of schools she was interested in.

I guess I will put that in the "ignore" file along with GM2.

They had yet to cement the PSU dynasty, that came two years later after the hodge class left when the program (not the team) asserted itself at the highest level across classes. Think about it from Frantti's perspective. As a 12-year old, she probably didn't have a strong memory of NCAA volleyball history prior to 2007. She saw Penn State win a national championship in 2007 and a team in 2008 that wasn't losing games, much less matches. She probably heard talk of 2008 PSU being the greatest of all-time. That makes a very strong impression on a 12-year old. She probably also saw players like Hodge, Glass, Brown and Wilson coming back and could sense a dynasty in the making. Why wouldn't an ambitious 7th-grader want to be a part of that program? The last thing on her mind was the gap between the 1999 and 2007 national championships.

Most of the PSU recruits have camped at PSU so they have gotten to know the campus, the coaches and players prior to committing. They have some idea what they are signing up for. It's certainly not a complete leap of faith on their part. RR has said multiple times he wants players who want to come to PSU rather than those who have to be wined and dined and convinced that they should come. Given the recent successes on the national stage, the pool of quality athletes who in a sense recruit themselves is substantial. I would guess this scenario is mirrored in the experience of a number of other perennial powerhouse programs. I'm sure a lot of young women with volleyball as one of their priorities dream of playing for Texas, Nebraska, Stanford etc.
