They get little trophies and some swag from the tournament sponsors usually. Nothing huge.

preconference 99.9% coach nominates his/her own player(s)- 1st place 3, 2 place 2, 3rd place 1 is the norm Which helps explain why Carlini was left off the all-tournament team at Washington. Sheffield didn't nominate her. When a coach is allowed to pick who she/he wants all-tourney (and/or MVP), it allows him to acknowledge various team members rather than the obvious choice every tourney. Sheffield can recognize another Badger who he thought deserves some praise for her play in a particular tourney rather than Carlini every time. Also, being named MVP in a particular tournament can bolster a players chances of being recognized as a 'player-of-the-week' by the conference as was the case for FOW, Brandi Donnelly. Illinois' libero was the MVP for the Creighton Tourney and also named the FOW for the B1G. If Coach Hambly has been able to designate which Illini are on the various preconference all-tourney teams, he has spread the love around to several different Illini over the three tourneys. (I had to get a Hambly/Illini plug in there!)

It comes down to the specific tourney rules. You are both partially correct. Most of the time the tourney director asks each coach to identify their top player(s) from the tourney. Depending on their finish in the tourney, it could be 1-3 selections for all tourney, and the top team gets the choice for MVP. Other tourneys the coaches are asked to vote for the top player from their team and the opposing team immediately after each match and the SID tabulates results. Once in a while I have noticed media members and/or score table staff given the opportunity to cast votes as well but this is actually rare in volleyball. I've also been to tournaments where I was asked to vote for one player from each team that we played. At the end of the tournament I turned my sheet in and they tabulated the votes.

An example, in my opinion, was Amy Neal being named MVP of the recent Texas tournament.
She didn't play much against ranked Arizona, but played very well in the next two matches. I think Elliott rewarded her for her hard work in the off season, at practice and during the tournament.
