I'm not a fan of Bethany Hamilton, just last year there was a boy who got his leg bit off and he wasn't doing a world tour to promote his injury. Yes what happened to her was unfortunate, but she and her family are certainly milking it for all its worth.

Shark attacks are unfortunate. What happened to Bethany Hamilton was unfortunate but not all shark attack victims receive the kind of attention Bethany Hamilton has recieved. Some shark attack victims slip silently through the curtains after the intial coverage of the attack. Some victims are never found. There are various memorials ( Like the one out at Leftovers on the North Shore of Oahu ) dedicated to those shark attack victims who have been lost. Every surfer knows that there are risks associated with the lifestlye. Surfers who surf regualrly out in the "Country" and other areas like Goat's Island in Malaekahana know that sometimes there are sharks in the area. I commend Ms Hamilton her for battling and moving foward despite her injuries. She was an up and coming surfer, pretty well known in the surf ranks. I think that is the reason why she is getting so much publicity. I for one don't think USAFAN was being too harsh in his comments. Andy Irons would be my favorite Hawai'i athlete. Two time Triple Crown and ASP champion.

Yes what happened to her was unfortunate, but she and her family are certainly milking it for all its worth. I'm neutral about her. But to defend their side, is it true they are milking the tragedy till it's dry? And is it true that they won't speak to Hawai‘i reporters if they don't show the kala? It just seems that way. Maybe because she's known in the surfing world, and that other guy, (Hoku? I think?) wasn't? He's just your average person going out for fun in the waves and happened to lose a limb. Not to go off on a tangent, but what I don't understand is the story of the missing girl from North Dakota, "kidnapped" while talking on her cell. Why does she get high notoriety and not the hundreds of children that go missing every year? Is it because she's white? What makes her story special? If the Hamiltons are extending their 15 minutes, the more I don't like them. The next thing we'll probably see is a made-for-tv movie and book signings.

Did you know Nicole Kidman was born in Honolulu in 1967 and stayed there till 1971? Her father was a biochemist researcher/student at the University of Hawaii. She even took ballet lessons at the age of 3 ...yes, in Hawaii.

Maybe I should explain further. What I see is a 13 year old kid who could be hiding in her room moaning about how life has scxrewed her over. Instead she got right back out and started surfing again. At that age, walking around in a bikini minus one arm would be a social nightmare. She, at least for now, is just taking it in stride. She just entered her first contest since she was hurt. All this publicity stuff almost always comes from a parent, 13 years olds are very seldom that savy. I think the way she has handled all of this, from what I can see, is pretty amazing.

Obviously from some of the responses here, not all sharks lurk in the ocean. Some seem to seek their prey on message boards. If she and her family take this horrible incident to garner a little bit of publicity and/or money, BFD!!!!! I'm quite sure I've never seen a volleyball player (even in Hawaii) try to get some extra publicity to further their careers (NOT).

For some reason, I think of the movie: Finding Nemo.

For some reason I thought you were making fun of Wolfgand until you got to the minus an arm part.
