Here's a really crazy stat. Badgers had 10.5 blocks, Purdue only 1. So we have now outblocked Minnesota, Nebraska and Purdue. The last team to outblock us was IL 14-11. What a crazy turn around for the badger block.

So...I have to say when we were down 20-14 in set one, I had deja vu with the PSU game. It had the same feeling on the Badger side of the net. It always seems to happen when my wife watches with me. I know some people on here seem to think that Purdue wilted, but what I saw was amazing defensive play by the Badgers from that point on. It was as if a switch went on, and suddenly Morey was in all the right places. That switch was my wife leaving the room to take her turn cooking dinner, so I'm taking credit. Haleigh seemed to be really off tonight, attacking wise. I don't know if they chose to target her, which would seem odd, but she also seemed a little slow. Possibly under the weather a bit. Sheffield said in the interview he did not talk in that timeout and Carlini, Morey, and Thompson got everyone togetber. Sheffield said, "ok let's go."

Looking at Wisconsins remaining schedule I think they should win the B1G they are the picture of consistency and resilience coming back to win sets and even when they are down they don't give up. I am still so confused about what happened with PSU is it mental for them or the pressure of the match. I wish they would play them again.

And I promise this is my final post on stats for this match...Bates had one of her best matches as a Badger, hitting .344 and two errors. A little overshadowed by Thompson at .786 and Chapman and .516.
Ok, one more insane stat. Badgers with only 6 hitting errors the whole match.

Morales had a great night defensively.

Morales had a great night defensively. Morey was all over the court, per usual. Bates and Chappy both had their best matches of the season.
And HOW ABOUT THAT BADGER BLOCK!

Seriously though, I really do believe that we played on our heels in that match...a little like the first part of set one tonight, only for the first 2 whole sets, for the most part. We gave initiative to PSU. At the time, I put it down to playing to avoid mistakes in front of the home crowd - playing conservative. Sheff however commented this Monday on the team's attitude prior to PSU, saying after the previous years success it was maybe a little blase, a touch entitled. You could see it in certain sets when they would let up and let teams make a run at them. They hadn't quite gotten back to competing and when they confronted PSU they were just off balance. By all reports they had some really tough film sessions after PSU picking apart what they did right and what the Badgers did wrong. That seemed to reset everybody and get them working seriously again. They have been a different team since. That has also got them visibly improving on a number of fronts week to week. So there is also the fact that the badgers simply were not as good when they played PSU as they are now in basically every way. Tonight it seemed like they came out flat defensively, but recognized the problem in set and corrected it before things got out of hand. That is a real improvement in mentality that they didn't show early in the year. I am largely alone in this on my side of the net. But I would like to see them play PSU again. I don't like unbalanced schedules, and I think it robs UW of the chance to take the crown (should they succeed) without the dreaded asterisk. I think this team right now would love another shot at PSU.

How much of the lack of hitting errors/Purdue Blocks is due to Carlini, and how much due to hitting styles?

They will play each other again. As for the unbalanced Big Ten schedule?? It is what it is.

The reason, IMHO, that the Badgers were on their heels was PSU was on fire the whole match. Nothing hit the floor and they made few errors. Since then, PSU has come back down to earth a bit and Badgers have taken that loss to become better and better with great resolve. Go Badgers!

It was a really nice win for the Badgers after they were down 21-14 in the first set. It was really nice to see Chapman having a huge match. I knew she would go off on someone, and I am glad it was in a big match like this one. Bates also had a really good offensive night that demonstrates how she is coming along as an attacker, knowing when to go with the power and when to mix it up more. Thompson was pretty much money and seemed to have the connection on the slide that she did at the end of last year, which is a very good thing. Those performances (and the huge kills from Carlini to end the first set) made up for slower nights from Nelson and Thomas. I would not have expected the Badgers to win with the Purdue middles getting more attempts than theirs, but they were able to get it done. In addition to the usual defenders, I would also like to compliment Morales and Workman on their defense. Those two seemed to be all over the place in the time they were in the match, and I have to give them credit for going out and giving it their all to help their team win even though their roles aren't as big as they were in the past. Also, I have to credit the Badgers for their improved block; the time they are putting into it is clearly paying dividends.
As for Purdue, Drews is really impressive offensively, as I thought the Badgers made a lot of nice plays against her, but she still got her share of kills at a pretty high efficiency. Jones is just hard to stop when the pass is there, and I think Cuttino is going to be a star in this league even though she had some growing pains tonight, especially on the block. The Boilers also made some great digs and won some long rallies that were just impressive to watch on both sides. They were a lot better offensively than they were in their tough night at Illinois in this match, so I can see them being able to do some damage down the line, and I don't think anyone will take the rematch in Madison as anything other than another challenge for the Badgers. Still, I have to give the Badgers credit for pulling out the first set and then coming up with some answers to close out the match after Purdue won a great rally to close it to 22-19. Good teams have answers. The Badgers didn't for a long time. They seem to now.

I agree with many of the comments posted already - a couple of things to add:
* I thought the play of the outsides was sensational. Best combined performance for Bates & Chapman of the year. I think it was a great move to bring Chapman inside a bit on several plays and allow her to cut back to the line. The last several weeks, her line shot has pretty much disappeared. She's been hitting cross into the belly of the defense and it's shown in her %'s. For all of the great things Carlini does, I feel like our outsides struggle because she sometimes has a tendency to push the ball too far/high to the pin. Many times Chapman can't get good hand contact on it and it results in a tip or a roll shot, and the speeding up of the offense has exacerbated that situation this year. Great to see them finding ways to move around and improve their results.
* Thompson put a nice match together and should be in the running for B1G POW if she is solid against Indiana on Saturday. She's looked off on the slide the last couple of weeks and last night she looked like the NCAA run Thompson of last year. Just really authoritative with the ball. Great stuff.
* Thomas had an ok match - her errors were mostly on really bad out of system plays when she was hitting from the backrow - and that dumb pass she put into the middle of the net on the 3rd contact. Carlini looked determined to make the leftsides successful in this match and didn't go to Thomas much - especially early. I don't even think she had a real attempt until more than halfway into set 1.
* Nelson was definitely off... lots of serving errors and lots of blocking errors. She gets a pass from me for this match as she's been playing at an all-big ten level so far this conference season. Top 5 or so in hitting % and blocking is great for her and the team.
* Lastly, I loved the grit of the team in set 1. I had resigned myself to the fact they were going to drop the set, but they just kept staying with it. This team is SO much better at the middle/end parts of sets than previous Badger teams. Carlini's back to back kills at the end of the set were awesome. I really don't think this team will be beat by anyone who can't just overpower them on offense. There are few teams that can do that (PSU, Texas), and even then, the team is playing better defense and blocking than they have in a long time and wouldn't go down without a hell of a fight.

Tough team. Nice road win. I think my favorite part, other than the win, was how I found myself saying "wow" and other things I can't convey on this board that start with "holy" when watching this team against Purdue. Haleigh hitting with authority. Lauren getting hitters 1-1 (although that's expected), Morey's D, Dom terminating and Kelly Bates smashing the ball. Of course, Chapman came back after the last couple matches and did what we all wanted her to do...use the block, snap and finish your swing to pull the ball shorter in front of the defense. Great match all-around.
