Interesting, Big Daddy doing play-by-play with Kevin Barnett on the telecast. That should be outlawed.

Shaw said Vansant reminds him of Logan Tom... Wouldn't be the first person. There was a discussion on this earlier.

what do you guys think of schwan going in for jones lately? Doesn't look like she's making much of a difference for the team. If not "making much of a difference" means she is playing just as well as Jones has been, then I would agree with you. She played stellar on Friday and had another good day today. I think she is a better RS hitter than Jones (while Jones is better in the rotation on the left), but Jones has been blocking better. But then Courtney had not played for more than a month before Friday, so let her get up to speed and we will see.

I don't see Linda Hampton on the ASU bench, does anyone what happened? I know she's expecting...maybe she is close to being due and can't travel. Otherwise, I got nothing. Correct, doctors orders not to travel.

Schwan played well again today, but I want to call out Melanie Wade who has had two very nice matches in a row now. From the service line and at the net, Wade has been really doing everything right.
Bailey Tanner, however, had a pretty rough match. Her sets were sometimes right there, but sometimes just not there. And I thought she got locked in to the LS too much, even when ASU was camping out on poor Tia Scambray, who then had to hit right into the block.
Macy Gardner just continues to impress the heck out of me, but the Huskies pretty much controlled her because they knew that the set was going to her almost every play. I noticed that ASU tried moving Gardner around a lot. I guess since they didn't have any other good options hitting, they figured they could at least shift where she was hitting from. Although at the end of set 3, Andi Lowrance seemed to get some good hits in. She's listed as a MB but I think she was hitting from the LS.
Early in Set 3 I was fascinated by how ASU was just totally breaking down. They were frustrated and emotionally not in the right place, especially Arellano. I was watching the drama so closely I really wasn't paying much attention the the Huskies at all. But they turned the tables around on the Huskies pretty spectacularly toward the end of the set, almost coming back into dangerous territory before the Dawgs got themselves back in order.
Strickland is really coming along as libero, both directing the defense and making plays all over the court.

Attendance: 2,572.
That is very impressive, considering it was an 11a Sunday morning start on a day when the Seahawks are playing a home game at 1p with Seahawk traffic in the morning.

Back from the match -- thank you Huskies for taking care of business and getting us home for big Sounders and Seahawks games.
ASU hung tough in the first set, leading by one or two points up until about 17-16, at which point the Huskies stopped making errors and ASU kind of crumbled. Gardner showed real flashes of brilliance for ASU -- a very smart hitter. But I guess we knew that, right? I also really like ASU's setter, Arellano, who is very quick to get to balls that no setter should be able to reach. What I'd really like to say, though, is that Melanie Wade kind of saved UW's butt in that first set. On this Sunday morning, Wade came to the match fully awake and alive, taking advantage of 50/50 balls at the net, making smart tips, and swinging away from the middle. Wade hit .909 on only 11 swings in this match, mostly in the first set I believe.
In general, there was a lot to like for UW in this match. Sets 2 and 3 were pretty much a clinic put on by UW. (Let's ignore the end of set 3, where the Huskies lost mental focus and let ASU go on a run -- just like when Utah visited here a month ago). I haven't seen the UW block this dominant in quite some time. It helps that ASU's offense (except for Gardner) is pretty anemic, but the block was great. Both Vansant and Nelson were fantastic today, in vintage form. Vansant had her usual great all-around game, serving, digging, and, of course, terminating. Nelson hit .600. Schwan again had a nice game; she has a very nice little roll shot that led to a number of points. And Strickland orchestrated play from the back, making quite a few spectacular digs. Floor defense was very good.
So where is there room for improvement?
UW's serve receive today was inconsistent. In the first half of set 1 and and towards the end of set 3, the bad passing got contagious.
UW's middle attack was again mostly MIA. After reading that the coaching staff was emphasizing using the middle more after the Colorado/Utah trip, I'm pretty sure they want more and better production from the middle than they got against either of the Arizonas. A more balanced attack will be needed on Wednesday and in the tournament.
Finally, my question of the day was whether we might see Tia Scambray bounce back from her recent hitting woes. I'm wondering if the Husky coaching staff was consciously trying to get Scambray's mojo going again because the Huskies set her a LOT (36 attempts out of a total 109; Vansant had 27), especially in set 3 when it was apparent that ASU was not going to win this match.
The answer to my question was yes and no. We saw both the good Tia and the bad Tia today. The bad Tia was in evidence for set 1 and the latter part of set 3: a tentative, "safe" swing that too often found the block or was easily dug, even on very hittable sets. The good Tia had a great stretch in set 3 where she swung with more authority, and with good location, and had more of her trademark tools. Granted, this was against an ASU team that was pretty down at that point. But it was a confident swing, and with a heavier ball than we had seen earlier. As I've said before, the Huskies absolutely need Scambray at her best in the coming weeks.
Bring on the Cardinal.

If I'm JMac, I would NOT play Jones Wednesday (or at Pullman). I'd let that sprain heal more completely...have her fresh for the tournament. I'm with you, tomclen. Don't rush Jones back on Wednesday, let her get some practices under her belt and make sure she's fully fit for the tournament. Schwan is doing just fine as her backup.

Interesting, I was watching the same thing. ASU has so much talent but Arellano's lack of consistency is sometimes devastating to their performance. As they say in real estate- location, location, location...
