Players who stood out this year (more than expected) for NE; Kelsey Fien - Did the 'sleeper' awaken? And Annika Albrecht - solid "D" and a great serving specialist!

Merete Lutz. Could be wrong, but I don't think many people expected her to be so effective this season. She almost makes me forget about Carly Wopat. Almost. +1 And she was not so highly ranked in prepvolleyball that year... was around 27 If I remembered it correctly.

I doubt anyone has a better stat line than these three (against comparable competition): Krista Vansant: 1,111 attacks, 476 kills, 121 errors, .320, 0.26 aces, 2.51 digs, 0.71 blocks Karsta Lowe: 1,212 attacks, 590 kills, 210 errors, .314, 0.29 aces, 1.96 digs, 0.64 blocks Taylor Simpson: 1,224 attacks, 516 kills, 150 errors, .299, 0.18 aces, 2.68 digs, 0.59 blocks Crazy Simpson has more swings than Lowe.

Given that the subject of this thread is "Players who stood out this year," I cannot in good conscience go to sleep without seeing the name of the POY, Inky Ajanaku, being mentioned. Hello?

In terms of stood out, at least to me means those that have really gone beyond what you expected of them.
Thus:
Karsta Lowe Taylor Simpson Martene Bettendorf Snuka

Karsta Lowe. There's no denying she's such an offensive force, even if everyone else at UCLA's not in that level yet.

I was curious about this so looked at the details, and this is mainly a function of sets played. In attempts per set, it's Lowe at 12.24, Simpson 11.03 and Vansant 10.79. (Of course, when talking about kill attempts in the Pac 12, these 3 women are ALL slackers compared to Madi Kingdon and her 1,581 attempts, or 15.06/set.)

In the big ten, I'd include:
Aiyana Whitney Alli Frantti Haleigh Washington Annie Drews Abby Cole (was good LY, big step up TY) Taylor Morey Courtney Thomas Haleigh Nelson Taylor Tashima Danielle Cuttino Kelsey Fein Kelly Bates (last 8-10 matches, especially) Nia Grant

It is amazing that Haleigh Washington is hitting .506 when she missed so many of the OOC matches because of injury. The scary thing is that her hitting continues to improve as the season continues. She could be a major force in the post-season.

Trivia, name the middles in the history of the league that hit over .470 in a season? I am only aware of Harmotto and Wilson. Hard to have a list of Big Ten players who stood out and not have Grant on it.

After seeing Washington's, Grant's, Lutz's, and Alhassan's numbers, Inky's numbers are pretty average amongst that group. She is still good, but only in comparison to those who are not in the aforementioned.

She's still hitting .431 and second in the conference - damn impressive. If I list Nelson, I need to include Grant. Grant has the hitting % edge, Nelson has the block edge.

Cat McCoy, freshman libero for Texas.
I won't list any stats since the only stat that matters is wins and championships.
