But did you play a doctor on TV? Then that would give more credibility to your diagnosis. Garrison's observation is accurate. The fact that she couldn't put any weight on her foot is a telltale sign that there is ligament damage. With that said, I do hope Beals is okay and Mike and I are wrong. I hope I'm wrong too.

Always learning - Finau is a RS freshman, so she's had the better part of two seasons in the program. I'm not necessarily agreeing that she has trouble with the back-set, though. I haven't seen her enough to know, and I think I remember seeing her put up at least one pretty one early in the season. But I also remember her missing some connections with the middles in that same match, so it was nice to see her have success right off the bat with a quick to Sybeldon. Anyway, it was a long time ago and a small sample size. We'll see. Yep, I stand corrected (twice). The fact that she's been practicing with the program for two seasons is a significant plus. And I completely agree with you that the sample size is too small regarding backsets and quicks to know what to expect.

She came into the program last year sometime around the start of the conference season. Some sort of eligibility issue, I think.

What an awful way to end your senior season. There's a possibility she may get back on the court but it sure didn't look like just a heavy sprain. Reminds me of Notre Dame basketballs Natalie Achonwa going down in their regional final win last year. You could tell as soon as she landed she knew immediately that something was very wrong. Notre Dame went on to make the NCAA final but simply did not have enough firepower to knock off UConn. Hopefully Washington can recover physically and mentally to be ready for the tournament.

If I'm Finau, though, I'm re-watching the whole first season of Friday Night Lights this weekend. QB1 is the captain, Saracen.

I like Finau and think she will be able to step in..but, as others have said, you can't replace the experience of Beals.
Plus I'm absolutely feeling physically ill for her...in all seriousness. It would be one thing if it was a meaningful match, say against Stanford...but to have this happen in the waning moments playing in that dump in Pullman against a team with 1 conference win (No offense WSU, but between that upstairs gym with the low ceiling and the most overpaid football coach with the giant ego...and now this...arrrgh.)
Fingers crossed that its not too serious. There's no mention of anything yet on the UW website or their twitter feed.
One thing you do have to acknowledge however, are the coaching skills of McLaughlin.
Not only has he taken a mediocre UW program and put it on the map almost from day one and kept it there EVERY SINGLE SEASON (which is truly remarkable) but we've seen this year that when two key players go down, there's someone in the wings who has been coached and trained and is ready to step in in an instant.
I will put up with the pens in the shirt and this new crazy white, fuzzy goatee...just based on what he has delivered for UW volleyball.

As we can be confident that both Jones and Beals were starting for a reason, we can expect that JM will make he best of this situation. Part of that is having and preparing players who can step in when needed. We will find how ready these players are and how the team and coaching staff adjust. (Always hoping that the injuries are not too bad and that they are back soon).

We won't hear anything official for a while. HIPAA privacy rules. They need Katie's formal permission to release any information, and I don't see them doing that before they get back to Seattle and have their own doctors look at it.
One good thing, if necessary, is that some of the very best sports medicine knee surgeons in the world are at the UW.

Beals looked like she was putting "some" weight on the knee. I'm hoping she'll make a miracle recovery, maybe wearing a brace, but...
The critical question is whether Finau can consistently make the backset to Nelson. If there's a fall-off there, then going to a 5-1 could be in order. It would mean running more of the offense through Vansant, including out of the backrow, as well as more slides to the middles. I'm assuming Tanner has been working on her blocking all along. She's already been setting all of the hitters but Nelson in matches.

Here's what's included on Beals in the match story on GoHuskies.com: The full story is HERE.

Not being a doctor, it's always been strange for me to see players with ACL tears walking around waiting for swelling to go done before undergoing surgery. But hoping for the best.
I know some of her coaching / friends from Lake Travis HS / Austin Jr days. In fact will see a couple of them at tomorrows Texas match. I'll be asking for any updates.

I'm sure Tanner has been working on her blocking too, but she did spend all last year with her foot in a boot. She may have worked in a similar system at T-Street, but it's a lot to ask for her to get her first college front-row experience in the tournament. Like others, I think she's improved a lot from the beginning of the season until now. I wouldn't want to repeat that curve in the post-season with her blocking. Plus, it would be a fundamental departure from what they've tried to do all season, which is spread the ball across the front row (other than a small % of back-row attacks from Vansant). It would be installing an entirely new system overnight - total panic move. At some point you just have to trust your players to run the system they've run all year long.
In other words, dance with the girl what brung ya.
