So much for Fullerton's 6-0 start. 0-2 in the Big West.

49ers win to start BWC play
LBSU women remain unbeaten with victory vs. Titans

A match that appeared almost too easy for the Long Beach State women's volleyball team Thursday night proved anything but. At least in Game 3, that is.
The 49ers, after coasting in the first two games in their Big West Conference opener against Cal State Fullerton at the Pyramid, committed 14 hitting errors to stumble in Game 3, then overwhelmed the Titans in the final game to prevail 30-20, 30-19, 31-33, 30-16.
A gathering of 1,320 watched the nation's 21st-ranked team improve to 6-0 overall going into its nonconference match against Arizona State (4-2) tonight at the Long Beach Arena.
Fullerton (6-3, 0-2) never led in the first two games as the 49ers appeared poised to send the crowd home at about 8:45 p.m.
But the Titans took a 2-1 advantage and later scored three consecutive points to go up 21-17, which was enough to convince Long Beach coach Brian Gimmillaro to call a timeout.
Trailing 29-25, the 49ers scored the next five points but failed to put the match away when freshman Heather Hetzer had a hitting error.
The Titans led 9-5 in Game 4 and were tied at 13 before Long Beach regained its form of the first two games while scoring 15 of the next 17 points.
Jillian Mazzarella had two of her 55 assists for consecutive kills by redshirt freshman Dyanne Lawlor (16 kills and only three hitting errors) and sophomore Mariko Crum to wrap things up.
"We got sloppy (in Game 3)," Gimmillaro said.
The 49ers dominated the Titans in the first two games, with 36 kills and only nine hitting errors.
But things went south in a hurry in Game 3 and the early portion of the final game before Long Beach with freshman Alexis Crimes (15 kills and only three errors) on the sideline with a slight ankle sprain regrouped.
Gimmillaro hopes his team will learn from a Game 3 that, despite playing so poorly much of the way, it was still within one kill of pulling out.
"There was panic on their (the Titans') side (when Long Beach rallied)," he said, glancing at the box score, "but there was panic on our side, too."
