Yes big ups to the Gophers! The next few classes are awesome. I have watched Kleinman dominate in North Texas for 4 or 5 years now. She played a year up until a couple of years ago, and was still the most powerful kid in the region. Pittman is the best middle in the country at 17s in my opinion. Stivrins is awesome too, but I would put Pittman ahead of her, just based on her physicality. Hart is athletically gifted as anyone. A little undersized but a great all-around player!

Exciting times for Gopher volleyball! When you look at the lineup for this year and even look ahead to a possible 2017 lineup (yes, still too far out), it's hard not to get excited.
2015 holds down an excellent core of middles in Paige and Hannah Tapp along with Lohman who will all be steadies in the lineup. Impossible to forget about a rejuvenated and hungry senior in Daly Santana along with the addition or an elite freshman setter either.
2017 could looks something like this. Looking ahead, I know, but this has potential to be a very good team! OH/RS- Lexi Hart, Sydney Kleinman, Jasmyn Martin, Brittany McLean, ?Taylor Morgan? MB- Regan Pittman, Molly Lohman, Taylor Morgan, Kayla Buford S- Sam Swenson, Sara Nielsen L/DS- Dalianliz Rosado, Alyssa Goehner

Btw, Minnesota is still after one more big 2016 and a big 2018 right now. Hugh and his new assistants have done a pretty good job recruiting this past year.

I appreciated Santana in the past for usually being one of the few players to take nice rips at balls that were set so-so. Now, with our new setter, not to mention likely little improvements from Schau and Handley duo (important if we run a 6-2), I expect Daly to have her way with the court. Watch out, endline trash cans and camera crews. Really, though, I see all of our attackers having a nice season and really becoming enlivened. Our passing is getting much better and is still improving, and the setting is golden.

Check out @gophervball's Tweet:
Picture day for the Gophs! I don't think roster pictures have been updated yet, from what I can tell.
(It's really these little things that get us excited before preseason, isn't it?)

Inching closer and closer...
I know this has already been discussed briefly by a few people, but I am curious what kind of system you would all prefer for the Gophers for this fall. 5-1? 6-2?
My immediate gut reaction is that I would love to have Swenson take the setting job and run with it. I love the idea of our hitters becoming more and more accustomed to her and absolutely flourishing. The last time I can remember one really consistent setter (in terms of playing time) was Carico. Let's make that happen again. This team finally has the personnel to make the true 5-1 work, a luxury we have not had for several years. We have the perfect player to run the show. Although we lose one front-row hitter when Swenson is in the front, our back-row attack is so strong as an option as well.
Not opposed to the 6-2, which could suit our attackers and blockers quite well, but I'd love to see us back in the 5-1.
Ready? Discuss!

I also like the idea of finally having a GREAT setter, if SSS is that person, and going with a 5-1. OTOH, a 6-2 would allow them to use a lot more of their talent. What I REALLY want to see is a bunch of players earning time on the floor, rather than them fielding a team by default.
I also want to see Katie S have a breakthrough season, so I'm conflicted there, too.

Expectations for her are high, and rightly so, but I suppose we are placing quite a great emphasis on her before we know some keys. Can she be a good floor leader at the college level? Can she block and play defense at the college level? Can she handle the intensity of the college game in a hostile, packed away gym? Man, I sure hope so. If not, we do have two fine junior setters who can also do the job. Like you, I really appreciate Schau as a player, especially in the all-around sense. She is a wonderful leader on the floor, she is lightning fast and athletic, as well as a good defender. If she would just set higher and just as fast consistently, she would be perfect. Handley is a very nice setter in the pure setter sense who really did not get enough credit last season for saving the team multiple times and turning multiple games in our favor. Anyway, I'm getting rambly, but I agree with you, as usual. Let's put our best out there on a given night. We have the depth to play around and tinker if things don't work. Sure is nice being at least three deep in every position now.

I admire Schau's commitment to the team but I'm not convinced "good defender" is accurate. I'd much prefer a 5-1 and, if people earn their way in or out of it, that's great.

Just keep in mind I said "great." I think we would do just fine with 2 or 3 good setters. But if you have a great one, she needs to be on the court as much as possible.

I would love to see SSS develop into the starting setter for this Minnesota team. Schau was good last year, but I thought that she was pretty streaky with her setting placement.
Also, isn't this team now like the Northern Lights team that won 17 Open + a couple of Puerto Ricans? I am sure they know each other pretty well and chemistry shouldn't be a problem, right?

I think Minnesota lost a future elite setter in Sydney Hilley. Her dream was to play for Minnesota, but she did not want to sit out due to SSS being the starting setter.
