Six Sunday matches are tentatively scheduled for Fall. August 30 vs Oregon St Sept 6 vs UCLA Sept 20 vs Cal St Bakersfield Oct 11 vs Long Beach St Nov 1 vs CS Fullerton Nov 15 vs UC Davis, Senior Night. Be very interesting to see Olevao's call on playing or not. Curious to know what other VT'ers think about this. My opinion is if a player voluntarily sits out games for whatever reason and by sitting out, the player is a detriment to the team, that player should not be a starter. She can come off the bench if they need her.

I'm just not getting the whole "Sunday is a Day of Rest" thing. First of all, this is not God's mandate (assuming, of course, that you believe in God); it's a man-made mandate. Second, the prohibition is against all forms of work on Sunday. You're not allowed to be selective in the type of work you refuse to engage in. Many believe you're not supposed to do anything that uses energy or operate an apparatus that uses energy. That means, no elevators, no iPods, no telephones, no gadgets of any kind. Don't even drive a car. It's not just work as in employment-related work. So, if I catch Manu-Olevao listening to music with her earphones or calling a friend on her cell or driving a car on Sunday, I'm telling God.

I feel like she will play on Sundays this year. Having senior night then and not being able to play would be a little rough.

I just find it odd, that some of the other mormons for Hawaii don't mind Playing on Sundays.
Has a BYU team ever played on a sunday like in the NCAA basketball tournament for instance??

Yeah that's the crux of the situation: selective adherence to your church's religious doctrine. I used to own a retail business downtown and had an employee that was Mormon and she asked that we not schedule her to work on Sundays so we complied. Then one day one of our other employees said she saw her at a Sunday afternoon concert (Reggae In The Country) out at Kualoa Ranch and she was drunk. In her case I can see that my former employee was using her religion to get out of working on Sundays so she could go out and party. But in Tai's case, to what end? Is playing volleyball a job to her? Does she think because she's receiving a scholarship in exchange for her play that is the equivalent of working? If that's the case maybe Dave should just take her scholarship away then she's not being "paid" to play volleyball then she can play on Sundays.

I actually don't know what the Mormon's stance on Sunday is because I'm not a Mormon. I also don't know anything about BYU sports history so whether there was ever a conflict, I can't say. But assuming the Mormons don't work on Sundays, I'm willing to bet a lot of money that if there was ever a conflict between BYU and a Sunday game in the NCAAs, the Mormons will find an exception. Also, the Book of Mormon is fairly recent so I don't know if there's a more modern addendum to the traditional prohibition of work on the Sabbath that's already in the Bible.

Has a BYU team ever played on a sunday like in the NCAA basketball tournament for instance?? eh, not so odd. faith is personal. i've wondered that too if byu has had to play on sundays for other sports/tournaments. although, maybe the NCAA keeps that scheduling in mind, when placing byu into brackets. i do remember when byu placed their non-football sports in the WCC, one of the concessions that byu requested was that conference tournament games (like for their basketball tournament held in vegas, of all places) would not be scheduled on sundays. a few years ago, when the byu men's volleyball team was here, there was a tsunami warning that forced the postponement of the second match between byu and hawaii, which was scheduled for a saturday. on sunday, the all-clear was given, but the matched was delayed one additional day to monday, because byu asked not to play on sunday, as per their school policy.

Not playing last Fall was personal and Olevao's call. Shoji knew that before hand and honored her wish last Fall. That was for 3 Sunday matches, now this year with 6 because of football Saturday, he's having second thoughts, esp. the 3 Big West matches. I may be wrong about their Mormon affiliation but both Adolpho and Higgins played.

With Nikki Taylor & Kalei Greeley returning, Tai's unavailability for 6 Sunday matches - including 3 key conference matches may give an edge to Granato, Castillo, or perhaps Mitchem for the OH1 slot - if the competition is close. They also apparently have a transfer pending & Huff may also be another option for coach.
If the choice is a "personal one," she has a tough call for her senior year.

Does anyone think that Stranzali could be the new player? I rewatched the UCLA match to hear the story of how she got to UCLA.
Chris MacLaughlin: "Her dad is actually my son Spencer's coach in Greece, playing professionally. I came up to visit in Greece and her dad came up to me and said "You know I got a daughter who is pretty good." So Spencer immediately got ahold of Dave Shoji and said, "Dave, I got this girl in Greece who is pretty good. I thought she was a good player as well." So her father said, "You know I don't think I can let her go to Hawaii, its exactly around the world. Too far for me. But we can go to the West Coast.""
She is off the UCLA roster and things could have changed so her coming wouldn't surprise me.

why is everyone make such a big deal out of tai's personal decision to sit sunday matches, something shes done for the last 3 years?
im not worried at all. we have great players coming in who will be able to contribute just as much or maybe even more. it's not our place to question someone's religious beliefs whether they stand true to it or not.

she could sit out the whole season for all i care. her hitting and serving are erratic and she's not a great blocker.

Putting it all together the UCLA and UC Irvine colors are the same and the poster thought he saw her in Irvine colors with the UC.... lettering.
