But you didn't win the NC in '13...and your coach got out-coached in the Final Four...again.... Jennifer Hamson

I think we lost to Wisconsin last year because of bad passing. I think we lost to BYU this year because of a bad game plan. I went back a year ago to rewatch the Wisconsin match and agree 100% that passing cost us that match. I have gone back to watch parts of the BYU match but didn't have an answer. Bad game plan is very generic. What made the game plan bad? Or what should the game plan have been to win?

Don't set the ball in front of Hamson, tip short in front of her when she's in the back row (which Ogbogu was very successful with) and make the lefts beat you, and attack the freshman setter's block. Aka, exactly what Penn State did.

Also passing probably contributed to part of that as well.

I'm not sure if the BYU loss was so much in coaching as it was the players on the court. It's kind of a shocker to see Texas outpass a team (which I really believe they did) and still lose, but that's a tough block to go against if your setting isn't 100% on point, and Texas had some weaknesses that no amount of coaching would overcome. It was really a story of "this is what happens when Texas can't out-size and overpower a team at the net" - fortunately for the Horns they are almost never in that situation.
Elliott made some nice adjustments in-game (such as the switch of Bell/McCage to get more offense) and he was in a no-win situation with match-ups (either you let Hamson tee off over Neal or Eckerman gets neutralized by the Big H). With their size at the net, they probably could have done more to slow down Gray, but she's tough to stop on her good days and they don't have the personnel to dig her like Penn St did.

Which leads to the changes in recruiting that Elliott has underway for the program. The past 2 seasons has shown him what works and doesn't work for the program to compete for a national championship. I still think '15 will be a transition season for Texas and will depend on the health of Dalton and how well the freshmen perform. But '16, specifically '17 and beyond, should be very good.

I think we lost to Wisconsin last year because of bad passing. I think we lost to BYU this year because of a bad game plan. I think they lost to Wisconsin because they were unprepared/looking past opponent. I thought BYU was better.

I had them making the final four before the season started. Texas, was a very good team, but BYUs block just was not breakable. TBH, I was shocked penn state handled them so well, as I expected it to go four, if not five sets.

They were trying so hard to attack Morales and Thompson's blocks they went away from their strengths.

Not being prepared for how tough Wisconsin served the ball was the factor. Poor passing was the result of the lack of preparedness.

We don't really have insight into what players or coaches are thinking, but watching the Texas/Wisconsin match it sure looked like Texas wasnt prepared for how good Wisconsin was and how how their compete level was. Players and staff looked stunned. Passing was a factor, but that was a function of not being prepared for UW to get after them the way they did.
