"The whole "unrated" thing needs to stop. Everyone has known for weeks that BYU was very good. They are an underdog, no doubt, but them being unseeded makes no difference. We all knew they were good before they beat the likes of Nebraska and Texas to get to the championship match."
I certainly didn't. I knew they had maintained a good ranking throughout the year, but I looked at their schedule before they played Florida St., and nothing stood out. They had many "good" wins (for example, LMU, San Diego) and a "good" loss (Washington 2-3), but no really marquee wins over top-10 teams. And, they also had an 0-3 loss to Santa Clara So, I assumed they were a fairly good team - Top 15-20, could make the Sweet 16, though that wasn't a given. But, nothing suggested to me (I could only look at the teams they played and the scores) that they could make a run to the final.

I have no real rooting interest in the national championship based on teams and conferences I like. And I have nothing against Penn State. They have an amazing volleyball program. But I admit I'm going for BYU. Why? Probably the underdog/Cinderella aspect mostly. Partly because PSU has won it so many times already. And partly because it'd be nice to see someone other than the same ten or so teams win the thing! Not reasons that will make me a lifelong Cougar fan, but at least through the end of the match! I know what actual fans of each side think! I was just curious how widespread BYU's support might be among other Volleytalkers whose teams are already out and if it's for similar reasons. Or is VT going with the traditional powerhouse? Tell us if you're going to root for Penn State and why.

I'm rooting for BYU just because I want to. Best of luck to both teams.

This is like picking between a beautiful woman and a fire hydrant Are you the reason that Columbus fire hydrants smile?

"Troubling" seems a bit strong a word. I don't really care who wins. With my teams out and having already seen PSU win it several times already it'd be more interesting to me to see another team win. That's really the gist of it. James, I was being facetious with the term "troubling". Ah, I see. Gotcha! Hard to tell online sometimes!

Penn State b/c they are so unique. All of their starters are from out-of-state so they have to overcome not being located in a state with a elite high school and local club feeder system for VB players. They have a program that can consistently develop elite players. They have a coaching staff known for being honest and straight-forward with the players. They have a tradition for VB excellence that has no peers.

Everyone will be rooting for BYU but Penn State fans people are truly just tired of seeing them win. This truly speaks to the coaching and talent they recruit and develop. Its the Roger Federer effect I say after awhile people just get tired of seeing the same win over and over again. Nothing against Russ I have tremendous respect for him and think he is the best coach in Women's College VB. Also Micha I may come off as a hater but lots of that is really attributed to how good she really is.
I personally am looking forward to next year where Penn State won't really be a favorite to make the Finals at all. All I hope of Saturdays nights match up is that it is good volleyball as long as it isn't a blow out I won't really care.
