Cal will be better than this year. I am telling you, Rennie is very good. She is Carly Wopat 2.0. Quick, athletic and can pound the ball. I don't understand why she is not ranked within the top 20 of that class.
Castillo is a nice player too. But I don't see her starting ahead of Smith-Gooden or Alftin. Maybe right side?
Cal has a lot of talent next year despite tue graduation of their #1 hitter. I could see them very well be in the top 6 in Pac12 if they remain healthy.

Rennie may be good, but does she address what's been holding them back? It's not like Cal has lacked for quick, athletic players who can pound the ball. They'll do better next year because the conference won't be as brutal, and because this year was basically worst-case scenario (law of averages, right?), but that doesn't mean they'll be a top team again.

I saw Cal a few times this year and setting wasn't the worst thing happening on the court. As an aside, looking at the final stats the setter finished third in the PAC 12 in assists and 21 in the country (interestingly Carlini was 20th), so she must not have been that bad. But their easy serves leading to perfect serve receive and first ball kills probably contributed to the opponents hitting percentage. And for the first part of the season Cal's passing had the setter on the run most of the time. The inexperience and constant change of the outside hitters had to contribute to inconsistency in scoring too. And it looks like they were in most of the matches, at least taking a set, but couldn't finish. Seems like a lot pointing to inexperience across the board. So, the question is whether there was enough experienced gained this year by those that will be on the court next year. If so, with the Rennie, Castillo and there is a libero coming in (Kirtley) that maybe can pair well with Kerr on the back row, they have to get a few more wins then this season.
