In each of the 3 major volleyball conferences (I know this is debatable that I did not include the Big West or SEC...) (Big 10, PAC-10, Big 12), who has played the toughest pre-season schedule.
For the Big 12 it has to be Kansas State playing CAL (10th at the time), Minnesota (4th at the time)and Florida (5th at the time) No one else has played 3 top 10 teams although now CAL isn't looking like a top 10 team.
What about the PAC-10? It is obviously not Washington, but I would consider UCLA going to A&M, Hawaii, Utah and BYU. Those are three tough road sites. Possibly CAL who has played UCSB and A&M at home though but both 3-0 losses then on the road at Hawaii.
The Big 10 would have to probably be Minnesota scheduling both Florida and KSU in their home tourney although Penn State played Stanford, I don't think they have played any other ranked schools.
Any thoughts?
What is the school of thought out there, is it better to have a few losses by scheduling some other top teams or to go 8-0, 9-0 playing cupcakes. I know it depends on a lot of factors like experience on the team, what their conference schedule is like etc... but what do you think? It just seems like some of the teams that scheduling easy are not young teams.

The Gophers also played USC and Colorado State (though technically they didn't really "schedule" those two teams since they were selected to play in the NACWAA tournament. They also played Loyolay Marymount, though I expect they will fall out of the top 25 in the next AVCA poll.

I know Cal's schedule was made assuming that Mia Jerkov would be back. That being said, they seem to be improving. My hopes are that they'll eventually gel and prove that they were worthy of a #12 preseason ranking.

I'm expecting Cal will "rebound" from the loss of Mia as the Pac 10 conference season progresses.
It was nice seeing them in the mix of teams at the top of the conference last year. I hope they can stay up there this year as well. I like seeing lesser known teams being competitive at the top levels of collegiate women's volleyball.
How has their attendance been this year (and last year) since they've been playing so well?
