Couldn't agree with you more. It will take Kevin all of 30 seconds to make this decision. This girl is very special. She was the best player at GJNC in New Orleans by a long shot. She could be the best setter in the BIG next season. Illinois has their best setter since Haen. They will be contenders for the title every year with her on the roster. Will poulter do what Carlini did with Wisconsin? With all do respect, Lauren Carlini turned around the Wisconsin program. Well Illinois is usually a top 5 team in their conference and they've been playing well these past few years. Before carling came Wisconsin didn't make a lot of sweet sixteen appearances so I think carlini changed a not good team into a good team, Poulter comes in with a team that is already good.

I mean no disrespect to McMahon but I'm not sure replacing her is their biggest concern.

I was watching Lauren and Jordyn senior film and I think they're are similar. I think Carlini is very crafty with her setting where Poulter is a more back to basics kinda setter. I was watching Poulters film and she get jumps so high when setting the ball. She also uses the middles a lot which is going to make the team more balanced. I will be interested to see how Carlini (and Wisconsin's setting) fares now that Courtney Thomas (the former starting setter for two seasons) is no longer on the floor with Carlini. Thomas was an excellent setter in her own right, but was switched to RS OH with the arrival of Carlini. Having the setting tandem of Carlini/Thomas always on the floor together was a huge plus for the Badgers. If a team had the strategy to make Carlini have the first touch, Thomas was there to deliver a perfect second touch/set to the other hitters.

The big thing is whether/how McMahon is replaced I think Naya would do well replacing Liz. Naya can hit faster balls and with POulter setting I think she'll get a lot of chances to hit against only one block. The main thing I'm concernced is how Naya could replave Liz with defense. Liz was a huge when blocking. But I think Poulter will make up for Liz's block because I think she is a better blocker than Alexis.

I really hope that Illinois has a great season, and there is every reason to believe that whey will have a great season. Nevertheless, there are a lot of issues. Despite high expectations, there are four important positions up for grabs. Obviously, the biggest challenge will be replacing a senior two-year starting setter with a truly outstanding freshman. I don’t know any of the players, but it appeared that Lexi is very popular with her teammates. If, as VT posters apparently believe, Poulter is starting by the first game, Lexi hopefully shows mature leadership and acts as a positive influence, and the other players accept the change. Both the second left side hitter and the opposite are contested positions. Strizak showed flashes of outstanding play but frequently was not able to finish. Roustio appears to hit harder, but not as effectively. Beth Prince is now reportedly healthy, and if she is healthy her potential may be greater than either Strizak or Roustio. Replacing McMahon will be a challenge, and there are apparently several options available to Hambly, including Stark, Crittendon and Prince. Stark also appears to be well-liked. Finally, there is the hope that Poulter’s setting will be more middle-oriented, coupled with the hope that Bastianelli is more effective on offense than Dorn. Personally, I think that Dorn will be missed more than people think. All in all, there are lots of moving parts that have to be resolved. Two popular seniors who have played significant roles will see reduced playing time. If everything works, all of the short-comings of last year’s team will be addressed in a positive way. There is also a chance that so many changes result in poor chemistry. Coaches and players have big challenges to be resolved this summer and through the season.

I understand were you are coming from, but Poulter is used to playing on new teams and getting connection early. She plays wtih USA and they only have a few practices before they start competing, so I think in the long run Poulter should be setter from day 2 maybe. I think Strizak can be a good OH, I'm a fan of her. I think she might be more consistant that Criswell. She does have troubles putting down the ball, but hopefully she worked on that this summer. Really want her to start trying to be a backgrow player as well. When Birks leaves I thinks it's important for Illinois to have a 6 rotation OH. She could also start getting sets from backrow, which just means more options for Poulter. I don't think Beth Prince will play her freshman year. She is still in the recovering phase, and I think it's best for her to red shirt. Dorn and Bastianelli are two complete opposite middles. Bastianelli is offensive while Dorn was more defensive. Freshman really do well blocking so I think so I think that is the main concern. There is going to be a lot of new faces on the court but I think Poulter and Birks can really be leaders on this team and Alexis will just be a great player on and off the court.

Does anyone think Maddie Mayers is going to be able to play next year? She is another option if Bastianelli doesn't really pan out her freshman year right?

I think she has a good chance of starting at the start of season. She is going to be a fourth year player this coming up season, so she has experience under her belt. I'm not sure if Bastianelli can play college right of the bat. It all matter who is the fastest as connecting with Poulter.

Here is a photo Scott Richey tweeted stating this is part of the next three recruiting classes. Not too hard to tell which recruits are DS/Liberos.

Defense and passing is not where it needs to be. That would be a huge liability for the Illini. I am confident that Hambly will figure out where and how to use each player effectively. Are any of these future recruits intending to graduate early as Donnelly did?

Maybe Kevin might have told her idk but she publicly said she would probably not be an outside. Maybe she'll be like an Ali Stark. And I don't think anyone really knows if any of these players are going to graduate early they still have a few months to decide, and we wont know until signing days happen and the coach tells us their plans.

Looks like Illini has a new recruit in Lexie Smith. She plays with Emily Hollowell out 2017 recruit for club. From her size I'm guessing a DS. Not sure she will be on scholarship. Guess the coaching staff liked what they saw in her at camp.
