There's a CEV rule designed to prevent all one-country finals that means a country with 3 teams in the playoffs (or 2 in the playoffs with 1 host), will have two of the teams meet up. Vakif and Fener were the unlucky ones this year (kind of a balance as Eczacibasi has been the screwed Turkish team lately). Otherwise it's draw. You should note that Kazan didn't win their pool. Do you expect Kazan to win either game against Vakif? Gamova and Del Core can definitely play hero ball for 3 sets. Vakif has been up and down a bit and the Russians block well enough to squeeze some hitters who have struggled to score. Kazan could take their home leg. No matter how good they are, don't you have to be at least somewhat suspicious of a team that doesn't know what its starting/best lineup is?

Rabita Baku is having financial troubles. Skowronska already left for Italy (to play with Gibby) and Ferretti is out as well. Sponsors were already feeling a pinch and probably lost interest after the CL loss. Lot of Americans there so will be something to keep an eye on.

If you had to take a stab at Skowronska's salary, what kind of numbers are we looking at? Think the pay is any better in Italy?

It's going to be tough for professional leagues everywhere, and obviously most difficult for those in oil revenue dependent countries. The situation in Russia is bleak and makes it unlikely there will be any opportunities for foreign players, except perhaps from "friendly" countries. The federations are already considering a number of cost-saving measures and proposals, including salary caps, additional transfer rules and more restrictive foreign player limits. Contracts for foreign players are usually pegged to the Euro or US dollar, and that makes it especially onerous for countries whose currency isn't one of those.

The pay isn't better in Italy, but at this point, there is more security (read: she'll get paid) than in Baku. C4ndle brought up a brilliant point a few weeks ago regarding the oil situation. The Azeri clubs are funded through oil money, when the price tanked, well you can imagine.

For years I've been wanting Foluke to get out of Baku. I hope this is her chance.

Watched Hooker play today in Korea. She is definitely still recovering from her ankle (it was noticeably braced) but looked better as the match went on. She wasn't putting the ball straight down like the Destinee we know and love.
Volleyball in Korea is fascinating to watch from the players to the set distribution, fans, and concessions items. It was definitely an enjoyable experience. I highly recommend it to anyone in Korea.

I don't expect her to be back in top form until end of May

Good for her! Destinee is such a fighter, and I'm confident she'll come back even stronger and faster. Volleyball just isn't the same without a player of her caliber.
