Dave is a remarkable coach. If Hawaii were in a "power five" conference they would be recruiting their share of top twenty recruits. For Hawaii to compete for a championship in the future Hawaii will have to have (imo) extraordinary home grown talent combined with a couple of elite foreign players. The same could probably be said for any program outside Big 10, Pac 12, Big 12, SEC and ACC.

I remember Dave saying back in the late 90's or early 2000's that the way BCS conferences were throwing money at their facilities was creating an unfair advantage for the BCS conference teams and that will adversely affect the smaller conferences that historically were powerful women's volleyball conferences like the Big West. Also, the way the NCAA has been gaming the tournament so that east coast schools get favorable brackets also hurts in the long run. So long answer to your short question: I don't see us returning to NC level or even final 4 level anytime soon.....sad to say....

I think you hit the nail on the head, Hawaii is lacking elite local talent that they had when they were final four teams, like Danielson or Kamanao. Higgins and Olevao just do not compare. Is Hawaii high school talent really down??

Hawaii does not get multiplie top recruits, in fact, they rarely get the cream of the crop. put this in perspective, penn state, texas, stanford, usc, Florida etc and soon to be wisconin, all have more top ten recruits on their CURRENT roster, than hawaii has ever had. Hawaii has only had croson and danielson. Ever had? lol. You're showing your age. Maybe I am too with my response but your comment above is simply not true. That said, your overall point is valid.

They've only had 2. Boogard may have been ranked 9. I'm speaking of prepvolleyball terms, which I believe started 2003. (May be off).

Hawaii's recruiting is unique, Coach Shoji talks about it in his book, "Wahine Volleyball-40 years coaching Hawaii's team," which is available through Amazon or bookstores near you.

What would you do?
