I remember Dave saying back in the late 90's or early 2000's that the way BCS conferences were throwing money at their facilities was creating an unfair advantage for the BCS conference teams and that will adversely affect the smaller conferences that historically were powerful women's volleyball conferences like the Big West. Also, the way the NCAA has been gaming the tournament so that east coast schools get favorable brackets also hurts in the long run. So long answer to your short question: I don't see us returning to NC level or even final 4 level anytime soon.....sad to say.... it's difficult but try not to be "sad to say". Higgins isn't that bad a setter. the onus is on Robyn to make it happen. Jeff i'm suspecting will be better able to communicate with Tayler than coach knoxs.

bill is right. Men's volleyball is one of the only sports left that the Big West schools can complete for a national title.
Why isn't the Hawaii men's team competing for national titles?

I was talking about Big West member schools and not the conference itself. I went back and made the edit.

The Hawaii men do not get the best local talent. They probably would have won a few championships the past few years if they had kept, Josh Taylor, Micah Christensen and Taylor Crabb home. Also Charlie Wade is a medicore coach.

Hawai'i will be very good next year, Top 10 talent for sure. I think the Wahine may start off around 17th in the poll but they'll beat Florida early and move up because Florida will be well in the top 10 to begin the season. Alhassan, Holston and Recek are good but you're not beating Hawai'i next year without a backcourt- You heard it here first.
Anyway, I'm excited for the Hawai'i/Texas spring match on March 19th.

I agree Hawaii could be very good next year. Granato is very good, Kahaki and Greely will be even better as experienced sophomores. But about recruiting, I feel as though Dave's coaching situation is not helping. I believe there are many players who want to play for Dave, but are not sure if they will get the chance. I believe if he ever said he is not planning on going anywhere or he brought in a high level assistant coach that would replace him, like Salima Rockwell at Penn State, the Hawaii recruiting would improve greatly.

Dave is a remarkable coach. If Hawaii were in a "power five" conference they would be recruiting their share of top twenty recruits. For Hawaii to compete for a championship in the future Hawaii will have to have (imo) extraordinary home grown talent combined with a couple of elite foreign players. The same could probably be said for any program outside Big 10, Pac 12, Big 12, SEC and ACC. Recruit Sabina Altynbekova

These are my thoughts exactly. Shoji will need to make line up decisions(Olevao/Granato/Mitchem/Maglio/DSs) early in the season though. It's a grab bag of great talent, but the formula will be the difference between Top 20 or Top 10. I see a Wahine win over Florida thanks to blocking and a diverse offense. I will also be at the Texas/Wahine match, my first spring match!

It would good to see Hawaii make a decent run in the NCAA tournament again. Maybe next year is the year this happens.

Jeff Hall will be an outstanding addition to Dave's Staff. He knows the game, now knows Hawaii, and is the great person the program has come to expect. There aren't that many great ones out there, so congrats Wahine fans

It would be fun though.

The same could probably be said for any program outside Big 10, Pac 12, Big 12, SEC and ACC. I think you hit the nail on the head, Hawaii is lacking elite local talent that they had when they were final four teams, like Danielson or Kamanao. Higgins and Olevao just do not compare. Is Hawaii high school talent really down?? Do you see the High School matches these days? They look like middle schoolers in the 7th grade. I graded in 2006 and IMO the kids started to come in Happy Meals afterwards. You'll see what I am talking about. The level, height, power of hits, passes, tempos, time, atmosphere and all of that started to die out afterwards. The last great players that stood out were Danielson and Kabalis. Note: get rid of Olevao and you'll start to see a difference. Sorry it's the truth.
