BYU takes the first set 25-18. Robbie Sutton and Underwood got the start.
Sander gets a kill on his first swing.

Sander puts away a bic that looked just like Taylor.

Brenden will be better than Taylor within a year.
I know they have the 6' 10" outside starting right now with a good block but if I were coach I'd be starting Sander.

Speraw knows little brothers typically have the most potential, Sander family is perfect example.
Will be nice to see them play on the NT together in the future.

Brenden is a monster. I'd like to see him and 6'10 get the start.

With Ben Patch coming back next season, and most likely starting, where will Dobert, Underwood, and Henninger be? Surely having 4 opposites isn't practical.

He looked great tonight really interested how they decide to use the foursome of Sander, Langlois (6 10 guy), maritev, and Josue when he comes back.

would like to see Sander play against a better team. UCSD just isn't that good. Has he played much against better teams this season? if so, how has he done?

Announcers said this was his first play of the season. Brenden's maybe an inch taller than Taylor and definitely has longer arms. Pretty sure Brenden will have higher touch too.

Brenden Sander and Jake Langlois started against Loyola, and they both had a few impressive moments, but seemed to struggle more and more as the set progressed, especially Langlois. He was pulled first and replaced with Meretev in the first set if my memory is correct. ** Oops, memory was not correct. Langlois played all of the 1st set and started the 2nd set. Meretev came in for Langlois with BYU behind 6-12 in the 2nd set and played the rest of the match. ** Brenden stayed in longer, but he looked worse and worse, hitting right into the block several times and seemed frazzled and unable to find a good rhythm. The timing was off between him and both setters. Ty Hutchins started the 3rd and 4th sets and looked and played much more composed. Brenden came back in at the very end of the 4th set for Meretev when he had some poor passes or was aced or something. I think Brenden was aced too, but he stayed in for the last few points. Had one good kill.
The following night against Lewis, Langlois and Meretev got the start and both played extremely well the entire match. I was amazed at how much better Langlois was. He passed very well, and Lewis served tough. He's earned his spot with his play. I think if he is able to stay healthy, he'll keep his spot, though he may have some rough matches as he continues to learn how to play this sport. Meretev is a little more sketchy. He was fantastic (really surprised me) against Lewis and Loyola and the first UCLA match, but he had a dreadful outing in the 2nd match with UCLA. I was expecting either Brenden or Ty Hutchins to come in for him, but it was Phil Fuchs. Fuchs was not at the Stanford matches, so that surprised me. Also didn't see Carson Heninger at those Stanford matches, so it was nice to see him playing last night. He's fun to watch because he's so quick.
It looks like Brenden played some against Santa Barbara, but didn't have much success, so even though he looked pretty good tonight, I'd also like to see him do it against better teams. San Diego's block is nothing compared to Loyola, Lewis, and Santa Barbara's, so he has not yet shown he can get it done consistently against better blocking teams. His serving is also very inconsistent right now. He's serving too many out at this point to be effective. But those bics last night were great. Can't wait to see more of those. I hope he works his way into the lineup this season.
It sounds as if BYU isn't sure they will get Josue Rivera back any time soon. One of the announcers said he can't even do a full swing yet. Maybe middle of February was too optimistic.

Not his first match play, just the first time at home, so the first time they and most of the BYU fans were getting to see him.

Just his first play at home. And when I saw Brenden at club tournaments, he looked 6'5. He was listed for HBHS as 6'5. Not sure why BYU lsited him smaller.
