I am going out on a limb to predict that Utah will finish 5th or 6th. True, they did lose 3 of their top 4 hitters, but Katoa will be back after injury, and they return Anae. They have a good middle in Trueman, and another potentially good middle coming in. They have one senior setter, and the other setter has a year under her belt now. They lost their starting libero, but Sutton has alots of experience. At least one real quality freshman coming in.
not heard anything about Kirst, a quality signee 2 years ago. She red shirt last season. Is she ready to go now? If so, they have some size and some hitters. They could surprise.
They are young though, only 2 seniors this year.

What has happened to the Cal program? Hana and Carli graduated. Time for a coaching change? How do you go from Final Four to potentially bottom of the conference in 5 years?

What has happened to the Cal program? If Ogbogu had gone to Cal they would be much better, but we know what happened there.

What has happened to the Cal program? Bad luck with injuries, too close to Stanford, splitting talent with other California schools, etc. Cal does have a couple of good recruits coming in though.

Hana and Carli graduated. Time for a coaching change? How do you go from Final Four to potentially bottom of the conference in 5 years? Always comes down to recruiting. Sealy went from national champions to not qualifying for playoffs in 2 years. Programs like Texas, stanford and PSU continue to do well even when all time greats graduated becos they can reload

But, if the recruits aren't coming, then it does go back to the coaches.

If Cal had one thing going for them this season, it was the play of their middles. They need a new coach. They've got talent on their roster, but for some reason things aren't coming together.

Cal's problem is the first two contacts. Simple as that. Passing was very inconsistent, floor defense in Zones 1 and 6 very porous, and then the setting was inconsistent on top of that. Old "good" Cal could make up with some of that with their block but those exceptional blockers have all graduated.
Bears have plenty of firepower. Higgins was one of the most impressive hitters in the conference last season, Schonewise probably the best slide attacker, Vuk is imposing, etc. They just couldn't get them good looks often enough.

Totally agreed, their passing and setting last year were really bad and it surely doesnt help when Gooden Smith did not play like the 50th ranked recruit let alone the 5th

Kerr's passing was/is fine, it's the OH's that struggled in SR (both freshmen). They should be improved with a spring under their belt.

I was at Cal's last home match against Stanford. Cal's floor D went into the toilet after the middle of the 1st set. Stanford's middle attack abused their block and Burgess was nearly unstoppable. The best thing about the 2015 season for Cal is that it is all over.

The best thing about the 2015 season for Cal is that it is all over. So many seasons for the Mariners have been like that....
