i agree. i've been thinking about this as i made my way to work this morning. had i walked in with a different set of expectations, i likely would have had a more positive response.
if i were to see it again, i would be better prepared. at the same time, the piece about the cat in charge of the night train, skimbleshanks, (had to look all of that up) was utterly ridiculous. that part made the least amount of sense.
Funny enough, there are musicals which I think had good plots but the songs aren't the very best. For example, Wicked and Hamilton, both are good musicals which I enjoy, although for some percuilar reason their songs aren't as memorable for me. The first time I saw Wicked I only played 2 songs over and over-Popular, and For Good! I’ve seen it enough times, know the lyrics, to understand the songs on a different level than the first couple of times I saw the show. For Good really gets me. I read the words at my aunts funeral (I’m no soloist), and could barely get the words out. The whole comet and sky bird part I could do without, but I love the friendship theme. Hamilton-I don’t listen to much of the soundtrack. I like the King’s songs, Quiet Uptown, and Dear Theodosa, Skyler Sisters, That Would Be Enough. My 8 and 6 year-old grandsons can rap the whole first song - it’s hysterical. Of course they replace the damn with darn 😀.

I find a lot of the music from Hamilton very memorable. And, "It's Quiet Uptown" is quite possibly the most emotionally powerful and moving thing I've ever seen on stage. Agree with Quiet Uptown. Sat next to a friend whose son had committed suicide the 2nd time I saw it. Just non stop tears coming from her eyes.

I really enjoyed the music in Cats--Memory and Magical Mr. Mistoffelees are on my ALW playlist. For me, no pretense of a plot was a actually better than plots I found unappealing like Chorus Line and Phantom of the Opera.

The plot...could be better, but go in there with adjusted expectations and you will have a great time, judge for yourself whether it is worth it or not. People have different taste. Just because some don't like it does not mean you won't.

Just give some time to ponder this question before I get to back to you. sure. i'd say that 2 of my most favorite are a gentleman's guide to love and murder and jesus christ superstar I like many musicals, hard to say any particular one (or a few) is my favorite. I enjoy classics like "King and I" , "Sound of Music", "West Side Story" and "Oliver!". I also like the 70's musicals like "Fiddler on the Roof", "Cabaret", "Annie" and particularly "Grease". More contemporary musicals I like include "the big hits" like Les Misérables (although I didn't really like Miss Saigon, which came from the same composers as Les Mis), "Little Shop of Horrors", "Rent" and "Chicago" (and maybe "Wicked" gets a honorable mention). Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals I enjoy include "Phantom of the Opera", "Evita" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". In particular, I like "Evita" and "Phantom". "Evita" I enjoy since Andrew is known for his family-friendly musicals, but "Evita", with it's mature/adult subject of political battles and sexual innuendos, is a departure from his usual type of musicals. "Phantom" is sort of my guilty-pleasure, I can't resist it when the angel of music/phantom of the music/music of the night combo songs are belted out, and that "cruise" beneath the opera with the candles and fogs is still an impressive spectacle. "Joseph" I like the songs, I admit I'm not a strongly religious person, but I don't mind the Bible story being told with such beautiful tunes. I look forward to Andrew's latest work, "School of Rock", heard a few songs and find it nice, the more rock-themed songs might be Andrew going back to his roots, since he did started out with more rock-themed musicals before transitioning to more pop operas. Disney musicals I tend to be a bit wary about, but I like "Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast".

Cats has that one memorable song, "Memory" --- and that's about it. But "Memory" is a doozy!
There may have been other good songs but I can only remember "Memory" (no pun intended).

you see the new trailer for cats?
Looks like a Netflix movie I MIGHT watch. Side note, I hate when they cast actors just for their name (Taylor Swift). She in no way has the voice for Broadway roles. I guess it can be auto tuned. Has she ever acted in anyth8ng other than music videos? Also seems like an odd role for Judi Dench to take.

She's reportedly excited to have a second chance to be in the show. I...have no idea how good this movie will be based on the trailer honestly. Hard to form any kind of impression of it so far.
