Our DD had a severe ankle tibia/fibula fracture at age 15 (completely through both bones, in the middle of the Active Ankle she was wearing). She jumped high for a block and came down on the hitters foot with the foot turned out and ankle in (foot everted). Her orthopedist said the force would have broken her ankle regardless of any kind of bracing or taping. She ended up with a lot of hardware in the ankle, but was still growing and was a fast healer. She did a ton of physical therapy and hard work to come back to volleyball in 8 weeks! Much of the physical therapy centered around proprioception and strengthening and supporting all the ligaments in both ankles. She had to do all kinds of balancing on one foot on a movable board or bosu ball. As a result, her ankle mobility is excellent and her ankle ligaments are strong. Because of the swelling and deformity 2 months after her injury, she switched to wearing ASO braces, which she has worn on both ankles since that time. There have been a number of times she has landed on one leg on another player's foot and completely rolled her ankle to the ground and back. I have seen some of these on slow-mo video, and seen her get right back up and jump. In spite of these ankle rolls, she has never had another sprain or any kind of injury in the past 3 1/2 years while wearing the braces. The braces definitely help, but exercises to strengthen the ligaments of the ankle, I think, have been the most important protective factor.
