they've been doing this for years on friday evening, outside (weather permitting) by the dorms where the girls stay. there's also a dj, vb nets on the grass and sand, etc. the girls -- especially the younger ones -- always have a great time on friday... It was a brilliant idea on someone's part to organize the friday night festivities and the autograph session! i'll try to be brief, but this is a great story imho. one year my 12s team hooked up with girls from another 12s team (from a club about 2 hours or so from us) on friday evening -- played some sand vb with & against each other, compared autographs, etc. as it turned out, on sunday the 2 teams wound up in the same 5-team pool. each team cheered for the other during pool play, and played a wonderfully competitive 3-set match against each other. when that match was done, we brought both teams together into a huddle and did a joint cheer for each other. to this day, some of the girls from each team remain in touch with each other...

This event has been going for over 14 years under another name . East Coast Championships. That group was enticed to move to Pittsburgh and then the Russ Rose ideas machine generated the HAPPY VOLLEY" Which is of course a take off of "Happy Valley" ala another coach with exceptional insights. I doubt that any of the attendees will end up playing at PSU but the idea is to spread the opportunities for young women to play volleyball at what ever level they are comfortable to play the game. It is a lifetime sport as evidenced by the National "AGE group event now being held in Detroit, Michigan.

It is a lifetime sport as evidenced by the National "AGE group event now being held in Detroit, Michigan. while those ideals are certainly part of it, the event generates millions of dollars for centre county, it would be disingenuous to say that wasnt the motivating factor for the event when ECC foolishly pulled up stakes. ECC pushed PSU for more money, and when PSU said no, they were foolish enough to believe the value of the event was the EAst Coast Championships brand. Nobody who attended the event ever referred to it as the East Coast Championships, rather Penn st tournament. If you look at the numbers for the ECC and Happy Volley, they were sadly mistaken.

Dale, I think you may have just naturally connected me with "brilliant idea" I of course was being facetious, that was my baby. both the PSU players and of course the kids love the interaction. ECC was so foolish to not see that the tournaments appeal was PSU/St.College. The fact kids can walk through campus and town, on their own and interact with each other, makes the event totally unique.

I played in this tournament as a high schooler. It was the highlight of the year for most teams. This was back when only a few teams got to go to Nationals or Davis for Festival. For almost everyone else, especially on the east coast, this was the culminating tournament of the season. And it was AWESOME. Staying in the dorms, eating in the cafeteria, walking around downtown State College, playing in Rec Hall. We always got to play some really good teams from Canada that would come in for it, and that was a big deal for a little team from Central PA. Not going to lie, this is probably what was the biggest influence for me wanting to be a college athlete. East Coast Volleyball was stupid to move the tournament. It was such an incredible event. I am so glad that Russ and Company (thank you, Dorothy) found a way to keep the tradition going.

Of course the title is misleading (this is yahoo after all). While Penn State may be a gem, it certainly isn't a bargain for out-of-state students, and I don't believe the SAT/ACT is optional. It looks like the only requirement to get on this list was to still have space remaining.

Great school, certainly wouldnt consider it a bargain.

PSU is at roughly $45,000 last I checked. Unfortunately, as state schools, they just can't knock down the "sticker price" as much as many private schools can.

Since Pa legislators passed the extra generous retirement benefits for state employees and teachers the cost at Penn State have taken off with no remedy in sight. An example would be a person with 40 years service could retire at their full salary.

I do the formatting, scheduling and seeding, and run Happy Volley tournament HQ. I am proud how our tournament has grown, and the interaction between the young club players, and the PSU players. We have had 3 or 4 players on the PSU team who have played at Happy Volley.
The creamery comment was right on. Do not attempt to go there Friday, Sat, or Sunday.
It is a great weekend,
Dale Flickinger
