This is a nice article from Darnell Dickson at the Provo Daily Herald about the changes. Team Olmstead to lead BYU volleyball programsAlso, BYU Sports Nation interviewed Shawn today. He said Luka Slabe is definitely an assistant. It also sounded as if he'd be glad to have Rob Nielsen if he chooses to stay, but Rob wants some time to consider his options. They've got the full interview up now on youtube.

What's the word on Ben Patch? Is it sounding like he is in for the 2016 season?

What's the word on Ben Patch? Is it sounding like he is in for the 2016 season? Don't know one iota about his plans other than what he has said previously. The article by Darnell Dickson that I linked to in the above post does say this about Coach Olmstead: "Shawn was able to meet and discuss the change with most of the athletes on the women’s roster, who are in Provo preparing for the upcoming season. Then he organized a conference call with some of the men’s team and reached out by phone to the rest. On Wednesday, he’ll fly to southern California to meet with several players training with Team USA, including Patch and Jake Langlois."

Whatever he gets paid annually, remember to subtract a tithe from it.

Interesting interview with Luka Slabe today on BYU Sports Nation. That link only took me to Youtube's homepage. Would you mind summarizing the key points?

Well, let's see what I can do. I'm usually too long with these things, but oh well...
When did you decide that coaching at BYU and coming back to Provo was a realistic option for you in your professional career?
He'd been thinking about it for a few years. He was skyping with Chris McGown in December and Chris asked him if he wanted to come to BYU, that they wanted him, and would like to have him. He asked for a few days, talked to his wife and felt it was a good idea and great opportunity in his career and their lives. Because getting a Visa and other paperwork takes awhile, he had to be "low profile" for a couple of months. In the meantime, he resigned as the national coach, everyone asked why and he couldn't tell them exactly why.
Was it worth it?
Yes, as soon as he made the decision and resigned as head coach, he knew it was a good move for him. He's thrilled and enthusiastic to be back with this program and university.
Did you wonder if you still had a job after Chris resigned?
Chris talked to him a few days before he made the announcement. It was not the most comfortable news to hear because he'd resigned as head coach of the national team, had told his agents he was done with European volleyball for a few years so he couldn't get into any serious clubs at this point, they'd sold their home, and his wife had quit her job as a big-time business woman, so yes he wondered. Chris told him he was still on board, that he'd talked to admininstration and been assured that Luka was still on staff no matter who the new coach was.
Thoughts about the new head coach:
Figured it would probably be Rob Nielsen. Then Shawn applied. Something about 50/50. I assume he meant a 50/50 chance that either would get it. He played with both. Both fine people and good friends. Both would do a great job. He'd have been happy with either one and wants to get in the gym and get to work.
He and Shawn's first meeting was very brief because Shawn had so much going on. He traveled with Shawn to visit some players and recruit and they were able to spend a lot of time then planning for the future.
Shawn is the same person today as when they were teammates. He's always been "special" in answer to being asked if he was always weird.
Why did you want to come back to BYU?
European volleyball is tough. They don't give you time to grow. A long-term deal is 2 years. It's hard to put something in place. It's hard to bring your staff with you, the people that are going to work with you and make it successful. That's the first reason.
The second reason. You drive a few hours in any direction in Europe and you end up in a different country, with different culture, food and language. In the U.S. you go from east to west and it stays the same mostly. To move my family around with my kids going to school and my wife a successful business lady, it just didn't sound and feel right, to move around, and I'm going to be away for 10 months with my family and then with the national team for another 2 months. I did the math, and if I would continue with this type of lifestyle, I would be away from my family I would say probably 3 years straight, basically seeing them maybe a week a year and every now and then maybe a weekend. So I'm like, I'm done with that. I need to take advantage, an opportunity to go to BYU and to the United States, and I get to see my kids in the morning, and I get to see my kids in the evening, and of course my wife. So that's one of the biggest reasons for me to come here and also we know BYU 's one of the best institutions in the world, uh volleyball program, not just volleyball program but all the athletic programs are just top of the notch, and uh, it's just great environment to be in. It's where I want to be with my family.
What was it like playing volleyball at BYU in that era?
When I came to BYU it was a little bit of shock. I'm not talking culture, or church, or anything, I'm just saying volleyball. You know here's Carl McGown, Hugh McCutcheon, Troy Tanner, guys with gold medals. And here is Luka coming and telling Carl maybe we should do it like this, and he tells me, so maybe you should go home, and you know here I am. I figure out I'm gonna have to be open-minded, I'm gonna have to learn, and it was a highly demanding environment.
So I can say, for four years I was tired--not just physically, but mentally. I was trying to be good student, to be good husband, to be the best teammate for my teammates, and uh, that's what I learned. Hard work, try to establish demanding environment, to have high values and standards, and seek for details because that's the only way to get better and to have some progress and to win some championships.
With the return of Ben Patch and the emergence of Brenden Sander, what are your expectations for this year's team?
It's not just those two guys. It's the whole picture has to be in place, the whole support team. It's not just support; every guy's gonna have a tremendous value because these two guys that you've mentioned are not the only guys that are eager at getting better to perform at higher level. Of course these two guys, I hope, they can be our leaders. I don't know if they've shown that so far, but that's something they need to do, in case, for this program to be successful, and as I said, it's not just these two guys. And I really hope there's going to be more guys standing up to challenge, and uh, what I really want is for these guys to keep each other extremely accountable for everything that's going on in their lives right now.
Wants the guys playing and working out with the national team to just keep getting as many reps as they can as that's the most valuable part of that experience. He mentioned Jake Langlois in addition to Patch and Sander. He hopes the other guys are playing sand volleyball and lifting weights.
What is the #1 lesson you took from Carl McGown that you'll implement in you own coaching style?
Attention to detail. No mediocrity. Those are the two big ones, but we can talk about this for hours. Just hard work and being loyal to what you do and there's many other things, you know, he's kind of, he's my bible. That's Carl.
Is the other assistant in place yet?
I really hope Rob will stick around and he decides to stay with us. Otherwise, we're gonna be fishing for another assistant coach because we need that coach as soon as possible so we can start organizing fall and especially winter.
That's pretty much it.

I talked to him (Reyes) earlier in the summer and he was trying to get a contract to keep playing, but that was proving to be difficult.
Talked to him briefly last night and he was very excited to be on staff with some great coaches.
