I always thought it was stupid to call it sand volleyball. The sport has its entire identity tied into the name beach volleyball...as it has been known by in the Olympics and since day one.
Smart move by the NCAA.

I thought it was originally named sand volleyball because most schools do not play the game on the beach. An Arizona team might find it hard to play "beach" volleyball but no problem playing "sand" volleyball.

It is a mix with programs in phx or az for that matter, sand or beach. Does it really matter though? Our 'beaches' are much more sand like then the cali coast, I see no problem with it being referred to one way or another.
