This could be a trap match for the Badgers with all their newcomers, but what I saw at the scrimmage gives me confidence in them. I wonder if I will get a shirt this year. I didn't last year because they started giving them away when the first match was still in progress, and I was watching that instead.

This is a HUGE trap match. WKU is not only a perennial NCAA Tournament team with some of the grittiest players around, but they play a style that is so different than the norm. They are a confident, hard-nosed team that will no-doubt stress Wisconsin most of the night. I could see Wisconsin winning in three for sure, but it might be some of the most uncomfortable three sets they have all season. It could also go 5 as WKU returns a huge majority of their team. One of the more interesting day 1 matches for sure.

Totally agree. Although I think it's discrediting WKU a bit to even call it a trap match. The Badgers, after all, are a young team. I've been saying for a couple weeks now this opening weekend tournament is a perfect tournament for the Badgers. The Hilltoppers are disadvantaged from being quite a bit smaller all around, but if the Badgers don't have the blocking game down, this is neutralized a bit. One of the "uncomfortable" 3 set matches I recall from last season was the Illinois State post-season match. Or was it 4? Here's the write-up from WKU in case the OP wants to add. www.wkusports.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/082715aai.htmlI also can't believe Badgerbreath scheduled something else for opening weekend, instead of being planted in front of his computer. Clearly he is rusty about the protocol for volleyball season. No life. Just volleyball. That's the protocol.

It's not likely they're looking past WKU at this point in the season. I think WI will be fine. It's also not quite the level of Colorado State trap match last year. It'll be a great defensive match, but don't forget, UW is usually not out defensed. They are also a fast team. Looking forward to the match!

You can't "over-prepare" for something that you don't ever play against and that you don't ever do yourself - you can try though. I didn't make any predictions that Wisconsin would lose, but this will be a huge test for them. WKU runs slow middle sets which give them a chance to see/hit shots and they run faster pin sets so that stresses the blockers. Wisconsin has some big-time defenders (ex. Morey) but I see this being a great match. Nobody mentioned "looking past" WKU.

It will prepare the team as well as they can be prepared. This is the team, the only team, they will play first. They've been preparing for many things in practices leading up to the first match, but I guarantee they will never get more practice time before a match and opponent than the first of the season. Don't disagree that this will be fun to watch. Can't say I agree it will be a "great match."

Historically under Sheffield, I think as a result of preparing for Big Ten play, the Badgers tend to need time to adjust to slower offenses, especially if the other team spends their time tipping and other offspeed stuff that is actually because of being out of the system. Badgers are prepared for the high speed, high level of play; a slowed down set requires a few adjustments. One of the most frustrating things to watch is when the other team gets "garbage points," those points that are from tips (not as a strategy, but because their passing and/or setting is bad). I'd rather the team be beaten by well-executed offense.
The Badger blockers have lateral quickness in Blake and Williams, but at the moment, lack of match time with blocking experience. It will be interesting. Kriskova seems pretty quick too, and we all know what the others can do.

Not for nothing, but Chris from PrepVolleyball has this one going to five.
That's a lot of stress for the first match of the season!
