Kudos to Colorado. They finish off the Sooners. Gonna be a long flight back to Norman.

Buffs get the win 15-8 in the 5th.
FSU, USD and CU all end up 2-1 for the tournament, OU ends up a tough luck 0-3, with 2 5 set and 1 4 set losses.

After watching all teams in this tournament I was most surprised at OU. They look like they returned everybody from last year but didn't look very athletic to me. They only went 8 deep and their defense looked bad. Maybe he wasn't trying to show too much but I don't expect them to compete in the BigXII with what I saw.

They only went 8 deep and their defense looked bad. Maybe he wasn't trying to show too much but I don't expect them to compete in the BigXII with what I saw. They were just a couple of points away from being 2-1, and could have conceivably finished 3-0, so I don't think they are too far off. That said, one thing I noticed in common with their loss to LSU in Eugene in the tournament and this weekend, is that the group did not seem to "fight" too well, which can be a problem over a long season. Passing also broke down in key moments. They could still be very good this year, especially since a lot of teams in the Big XII seem to have problems of their own.

Yes, all of those matches could have gone either way. I guess you shouldn't put too much stock on the first tournament of the year. I thought they might come roaring out of the gate with everybody returning and a new assistant coach but it's still very early. This weekend they should fare better although the quality of competition doesn't impress me too much. Defense particularly blocking was a problem last year so we will see if they can overcome that this year.

I just got back from Boulder and the tournament.
This was a very good tournament. Out of the six matches, three went 5 and two went 4. The only sweep was FSU over San Diego, but this came right after Colorado beat FSU in five, so FSU was motivated.
San Diego was very impressive. I thought that they would be over matched physically but they had smart volleyball players and they fight very hard. They were the surprise team for me this tournament. Loved their Libero, even with the purple hair.
FSU and Colorado play very similar styles. I think FSU is a little better at what they are doing than Colorado even though Colorado beat them. Their 6-2 run smoothly and they used their OPP hitters very well.
Colorado ran a 5-1 with occasional 6-2 thrown in against San Diego, but went full 6-2 for the other two matches. Austin was incredible for Colorado. Very physical and they run a nice offense.
FSU played very comfortably and with an even emotional keel. They understand their offense very well and they just keep grinding.
Even though Oklahoma lost in four to FSU the first match, they were up in the first two sets before making mistakes at the end of the sets to give FSU their opening, this was the late match Friday night. They then played the 9:30AM match against San Diego. Kind of a tough turn around. The reason for the early start was that Colorado had to play at noon against FSU to get on TV.
The only tougher turnaround was that FSU played the noon match against Colorado and then had to play the 5PM match against San Diego. I don't know which I would prefer.
Oklahoma again made critical mistakes, missed served, missed dig, etc. to give the match away. And they did the same thing with Colorado.
Even though OU have the same players back, they are tweaking their roles, giving some players bigger roles in the system, so it is an adjustment.

Sooners looked a little out of sorts tonight. Hope this isn't the norm this year. Don't appear to have their best atheletes on the court.

Oklahoma switched Libero and moved some players around in the rotation, as well gave some young players a chance to play, they are a work in progress.

Yes, you can tell there is a new assistant coaches influence going on. Seems to want the bigs to play all the way around with less emphasis on defensive players. Should be an interesting evolution to watch and see how it works out. They were very weak defensively last year so should be interesting.
