Only saw part of the 2nd set. Is Carlini favoring her leg? I would say no. The floor has been slippery so I think you might be seeing some slippery landings. Nelson and Gillis make all-tourney. Good match tonight, makes we wonder how the team would have done in Colgate, Charleston, Western Kentucky order. I am a smidge worried about Bates. Year 2, she's now being covered well. BUT, Gillis coming on strong instead. I am confident they will get Gillis's defense improved. If this is how she's responded to a whole new system offensively, have to think they can get that improved too. Also delighted by Kriskova (Kreesh KO va) and how she's shaking off the rust we saw last weekend. Would like to see more of Duello so she's ready to go when needed.

If you put it that way, I can see DMT's point about scheduling. badgers almost looked normal this evening. CofC gave WKU fits earlier today.

I might be imagining things, but when she's not moving with purpose (e.g., to a ball), she seems to be favoring it slightly. Pleased with what I saw tonight. -Romo tearing it up. -A-mac's serving and passing. -Gillis clearly more comfortable, making better shots, getting to balls on D. -Tionna gaining confidence. -Haleigh looks good on block coverage. Bates has a target on her back, that's for sure. I'm confident she'll hold up, but it might be rough going for a bit as she gets used to it.

Well, I'm not sure I buy all the Bates worry. It's not a new role. She was the L1 from the Iowa match on last year and did fine. The only reason teams are targeting her this year is because she is the only known offensive entity this year on the front row - other than Nelson. If you can develop a good slide attack, or a reliable back row attack to spread the defense, Bates will be fine. You have to make a defense pay for cheating like that. I still feel she gets a little impatient when the shot isn't there, and takes a whack even though the percentage option might be to keep the ball in play but make the opposition work to beat your defense, which is pretty strong.
Maybe three matches in two days is a little much for Carlini's leg. Could have some sore muscles.

It was by far the Badgers' most complete match of the weekend. They obviously still have a lot to work on to get where they want to be, but I am sure you can say that about a whole bunch of teams at this point. I do hope that Carlini and Williams get the connection down so they feel comfortable going to it in tight situations, but that is something that should come with time and reps. When it is on, I think it will be hard to stop. You have to like getting two blocks per set from a freshman middle making her first starts. Otherwise, I thought Gillis hit pretty well again. The offense seems like a good fit for her. She was on the receiving end of the Carlini highlight reel play of the night, when Carlini turned her body and made a shoot set to Gillis from the right side near the three meter line to the left side, resulting in a split block and kill. Despite not having the best weekend hitting, I thought Bates did a good job in the back row. Nelson was solid again and got a big point late with her serve. MacDonald had a bit of a rough patch passing but is clearly helping make the Badgers stronger in the back row. Her serve was way more aggressive than it was last weekend in the scrimmage and helped ignite some big scoring runs. It was really nice to see Kriskova get going offensively tonight. She can certainly bring the heat and put the ball away. Just happy for her after all she has been through. At any rate, it was good to see the Badgers playing better and doing a better job in controlling things on their side of the net. With all the new faces and people coming off injuries, it is clearly a work in progress, but, since Sheffield had a lot of good things to say about the work ethic of this group, I have confidence that the players and staff will be able to work and make strides going forward.

Taking the big picture view of this match and weekend in general, you really got the sense that the badgers were working things out as the games progressed - and doing so systematically. That suggests the leadership is there to work through the problems constructively. You could see it on the court when Carlini and Morey would talk to the others after mixups, just clearing things up. Nelson really stepped up her aggression at the net when the team needed it against Colgate. The others really seemed to absorb the information and get progressively much more comfortable with the speed of action and thought in competitive matches at the collegiate level. Williams really seemed to get much more confident even within that last match. Kriskova definitely shook off some rust. We were getting more one on ones across the court. Defense started playing like we know it can.
I'm still hoping we see more of Duello. Not sure it will happen next weekend against UNC, maybe Louisville.

When the passing broke down, you had double blocks and players were pressing, getting blocked, errors, etc... It'll all work out in the end. Just a question of how quickly they can work through the kinks to become a true team.

Well, I'm not sure I buy all the Bates worry. . Agreed, she is hitting it hard, harder than last year I think. Last year she averaged ~27 attacks per match, through 3 this year she is at 28/match. Hitting last year of .205, this year .202. Of course, last years was after the B10 conference and postseason and this years is only through 3 games. Also liking the backrow attacks this year that are coming through, I may be wrong but don't think they really used that a lot last year. Of course they used it with Courtney but it seems to be a regular part of the offense this year. I can't wait to see more of Amber, I knew I should have gotten a #7 jersey made last year instead of picking up a #1. Lauren is Lauren, all you can say. But Deme and now Amber for 4 years? That is the right number to have.

Just a passing note as kudos to Rainbow Badger for set up this weekend's match threads. Now that's how a thread gets done: all the links on the OP for everyone to find easily. Wish other posters could do the same for their respective matches.
With other respect to the match, I hope too we see more of Duello, but boy, Sheffield is in a tight spot given the production he is getting so far.

There is a Charleston fan who is a psychotic screamer. Hi Badgers fans Charleston psychotic screamer here. Thanks for hosting the tourney this weekend. Very good-looking campus, friendly people all over. The Coug team captain is from Milwaukee so most of our small band of Chucktown supporters had mixed allegiances this weekend in WI. Areas for Improvement 1.) You should not be getting out-cheered in your home barn by a solitary opposing fan. Especially when my voice was at 2.5/10 after blowing it out in our previous matches... It's not like you have to travel cross-country to Duke or Oregon somewhere for role models. Mich State or Ohio State can teach you just fine. 2.) Does the No. 5 ranked team in the country need such a homer ref? I think not. The two calls of Line Judge: "Out" Head Ref: "Nonsense, that was clearly in!" were particularly egregious. Also all the missed/ignored doubles calls (for both sides) looked equally bush league. 3.) Your Cutler-faced coach needs to step up his in-state recruiting. Thanks again for the hospitality.

Fair enough. Generally, UW crowds are pretty polite, especially in preseason. They get a lot more invested in conference matches, but we do need to build student support. That would raise the noise level. 2. Funny, I had the same opinion in the opposite direction. Goes to show. Ref's are in preseason too. 3. You could raise the same criticism of PSU, or even Chrleston, but this is being addressed. We have one recruit this year and three in state players coming in over next two years - two (M.E. Dodd and Whalen) will probably be senior aces. Also we traditionally (for 20+ years) pull a lot of recruits from northern Ill which is very nearby (Carlini, Juley, Saunders, e.g.). Sheff has ties to Indiana, thus the recent Indiana pipeline (Williams, Gillis, Morey). Maybe you are talking about Morello. But I don't think Sheff was at UW when she was being recruited.

Hey, Charleston Screamer - thanks for checking in. Hope you had a pleasant weekend.
I was glad to see that CoC had a loud crowd. As the Fan Bus has taught me, homer fan support on the road makes all the difference for teams.
Can't speak to what happened with anyone's recruiting, but Sheff only brought in the current sophomores and freshmen, plus Taylor & Romo, who transferred in.
Good luck to the Cougars this season.

Where is the student section for the Badgers? On TV, all you see is white hair.... not the loudest group of people. where's the younger folks though?

From the camera view, they are to the right in the south end zone (so you'd only see the section if the camera view was the north end zone). Students just arrived, so Saturday night was lightly attended, but Friday was solid.
Not all of us are white-haired, not even close, but you are absolutely right. It's kind of sad given that this and wbb are the only affordable tickets (that are indoors).
